OK, I've got dates and a venue for a Midwest Rickenbacker Confluence (MRC) and "The Rickenbacker Electric Bass" Launch Event (TREBLE, ironically)! This event is largely to celebrate the release of my book, "The Rickenbacker Electric Bass - 50 Years as Rock's Bottom" (Hal Leonard Books), and to get together with Rickenbacker enthusiasts from all around the Midwest (and folks from anywhere else, too).
WHEN: Friday, July 19 (6-10pm), Saturday, July 20 (1-9pm), Sunday, July 21 (10am-5pm).
WHERE: Waterstone Bank community room (basement), 6560 South 27th Street, Oak Creek, WI 53154. Oak Creek is an adjacent suburb (south) of Milwaukee. The bank is just a few miles from Milwaukee's airport and close to I-94 freeway and several motels and eateries. This is the same location as the 2011 event. Several BGCers attended that one (c'mon back!).
HOW MUCH: Cheap as I am  , the event is free!
WHAT'S HAPPENING: I hope this event will be similar to the one we held two years ago, but hope to gather more people and more instruments. This event will not include an official jam session or gig, so there should be no sour notes on who gets to play. There will be some small amps there, and you're invited to bring one. Spontaneous jams are inevitable. Last time we had a little over 50 Ricks on display and about a dozen folks strolling through the two day event.
My book will be available for sale at the event. Gary Hahlbeck of North Coast Music will be there with a supply of the book for sale, and I will always be glad to sign your copy if you like. If you already have a copy, that's fine; bring it and I'll sign that, too.
Since I am no longer playing actively and as the book is done, I will be selling many of my Rick basses. Because shipping is a hassle, I would prefer to sell in person. I'm going to give attendees of MRC/TREBLE first crack at them; what doesn't sell then will eventually go in the for-sale forums or to eBay. So come early, buy often.
So, hope to see everyone in Milwaukee in July – hey, it's warm then!

Congratulations, Paul.
Sorry to hear you'll be selling a lot of basses, I'm sure they'll find good homes though.

Thanks, Dave. I'll be holding on to that beautiful 4004 Cheyenne I bought from you back in 2003. That's a keeper. I'll likely hold on to three or four, but 16-17 are going to be on the block!
-
I'll be there in spirit, congrats Paul!
-
Well doesn't that figure? My busiest weekend of the summer (so far) with pending gigs Thursday and Friday, TWO confirmed on Saturday, and another on Sunday. I'd like to see what you're selling. I'm not particularly in the market for anything, but I know you have some interesting pieces!
-
An update:
Looks like Gary Hahlbeck of North Coast Music will probably not be selling books. That means that I will be selling them myself.
Hal Leonard Books just informed me that they have received a few advanced copies of the book and will be sending them to me immediately! Yahoooo!
I finally get to see the real deal after about eight years of effort!!!
-
I'm really excited for you, Paul. And thankful.
-
Good luck...

Got the advance copy! Here it is! ;D

Yes. $24.99 for 144 pages (plus fold-out timeline/family-tree graphic and covers), 317 photos (nearly all in color), and the best Rickenbacker bass reference book you can find. Wait: The ONLY Rick bass reference book you can find!

Good price - a lot cheaper than I expected...

Same here! Best of luck to you.

I have an open order at Amazon. Delivery estimate is August 2...
-
We need a review of that little item - might be the closest I get to owning one... ;)
-
Amazon says July 9th publication date.
-
Yes, July 9 is the official release date which means that is the date the publisher expects to have copies to book dealers and outlets. It'll probably be available before that date, but don't know for sure. The book is printed in Hong Kong, and I suspect the entire stock will be in a container on the proverbial "slow boat from China." Once it gets out of the Stateside harbor, the stock will go to some distribution point to be shipped on to the dealers who ordered, and then out to customers or put on the shelves for your reading pleasure! :)
-
My issue of the book is on it's way, but I am way too curious... Could someone make a crappy phone pic of the page I am on? ;D I believe it's page 27.
-
I just sent you a shot, Chris. Just an adviso to all, please don't post photos of contents of the book (or any book) on this or any website without written permission of the publisher/author. (Copyright laws).
-
Thanks, Paul! You are totally right! It's against copyright to do that. And please notice I just am curious about the page so that's why I asked for a crappy pic;) Didn't want to get the whole content online. You worked too hard for it.
On the other hand it could be good to have some very small, not readable pages online, so people can see how good the book looks. Just my humble opinion.
When I have the book, I wanted to make a crappy pic of myself in the book, to show on facebook and to gather interest in the book among my Rickenbacker playing fb-friends. But I won't do that if you are against it.
-
I believe it is acceptable to "review" a publication and a small section of text for "illustrative purposes", as Chris should know, being in the trade... ;)
-
I received an email today from Amazon saying that my copy of the book has been shipped to me. With any luck I'll see it in a couple of days from now. :)

Congrats, Paul!
Thanks, guys. Not really a review; that's the standard news release from the PR people at Hal Leonard. But I'm anxious to read REAL reviews from the bass mags, soon I hope.
-
My copy of the book arrived yesterday. I've only have had a quick opportunity to look through it, but looks great so far.

They don't matter. They don't know about Ric basses more than you do. You have given this community a long-awaited and much-needed reference book. If you are content with your book, that's all that matters, really.
-
I got the book last week it's a great book, lot's of nice pictures.

Thanks, Ilan. I'd just like to know what other "professional journalist" think of my scope of content, layout, and the "field-guide" approach to a defined subject. I've not seen another guitar book like that and hope others see it as a good idea.
-
Never knew what your "profession" was until I read that "review" so the opinion of your peers is always an important factor... I'll be ordering up a copy once I have some clear time away from the "bathroom" and as your a little toooo far away to personalise I'll pm you for an insert... ;)
It's got to sell, Paul; just looks too good not to... not going to make you rich, but will almost certainly net you more than mine when I get it finished...
-
Just got the book. Had a quick look, I absolutely love it. The attention to every detail, the well-written text, the elegant design, of course the photos.
I'm looking forward to reading through it cover to cover, slowly, enjoying every word and every pic.
Every Ric bass player should own a copy. It's a must-have.
It's also the perfect gift for Fender bass players ;)
Instant classic, Paul. My hat's off to you.
-
Thanks, Ilan. Did you get a copy sent to Israel by Amazon? Did a friend send it? I'm not sure how the international distribution is done as it's all handled by the publisher.
-
Directly from Amazon.
-
Got mine yesterday! I've really only skimmed through it so far, but it looks great! Lots of eye candy, the colors are deep. Nice work, thanks Paul!
