Guitars Etc. / 1973 Gibson L-5S
« on: April 16, 2015, 04:43:48 PM »
While vacationing in Nashville last Monday, we stopped in at the new, (new to me) Gruhn's Guitar location. They happened to have a '73 L-5S with low impedance pickups. The gold hardware was rather worn, as most of them seem to be. It had also had a refret done. After trying to convince myself I didn't really need it, because it isn't a Les Paul........ I made them an offer & it was accepted. They shipped it yesterday so it should arrive Monday, just after I make it back. That's the last of the low impedance series for me........... Speaking of low impedance guitars, we stopped at the Antique Archeology location on Nashville, they had a Les Paul Professional on the wall for $4,200.00. Mike picked that from somewhere...... Photos to follow after I get back home...

Gibson Basses / Cheesy EB-1 Case
« on: April 04, 2015, 06:38:30 AM »
I know that I've brought this up in the past, but I ran into another one. My first EB-1 Reissue had this same case, I thought for sure it was some after market case. Gibson would never have allowed blocks of exposed foam to be glue on one of their cases like this! I've seen at least four of these now, this one across the pond. The outside was sort of a vinyl grey alligator looking cover & very flimsy. I ended up buying an Epiphone case & modifying the center block because the Epiphone EB-1 was the same shape as a Hofner bass. At least after 46 years, the foam hasn't started to decompose................

Here is a shot of my second EB-1, with what I would consider a more Gibson like case..........

Gibson Basses / Gibson EB 2014 5 String
« on: February 24, 2015, 06:43:18 PM »
At practice tonight, I played a Gibson EB 2014 5 string. I was quite impressed. I've never really played a 5 string, didn't really want to after all of these years of playing a "normal" bass, but it wasn't bad. I was most impressed by the pickups in the EB bass. All of the other pickups in all the recent models seem to be TB+ pickups, these were really ballsy, well balanced. It had push pull volume knobs to switch the pickups to single coil. The neck was a bit wide, but I didn't fumble around half as much as I would have anticipated I would. Anybody else try one??

It sounds like the iconic stack on the Gibson Kalamazoo plant was scheduled to come down today, can't find anything to confirm this.......

Gibson Basses / Les Paul Bass on Pawn Stars
« on: July 18, 2014, 06:02:31 PM »
Yesterday, I was watching the new episodes of Pawn Stars & noticed a Les Paul Bass in the background.............

A few months ago they featured a Les Paul Professional on the show. Rick was rather puzzled by it, thought it was modified. Even after they called in Jesse from Cowtown Guitars to evaluate it, they didn't have all of the facts straight. At least these low impedance models are getting a bit of exposure on TV after 45 years!

Guitars Etc. / Motion Sound SRV-212
« on: July 12, 2014, 12:44:50 PM »
After watching this on Craigslist for over a month, I made the seller an offer & dragged it home. Upon researching it, I couldn't find any photos of the insides anywhere online. So naturally, I had to take it apart as soon as I got it home. It's a nice design, a lot more versatile  than my Leslie 16. I don't know if I'd ever try running bass through it yet. The previous owner rewired the speakers in series to change it from 4 to 16 ohms, I may change it back. I believe this model is discontinued, Sweetwater is still selling them.

Gibson Basses / Gibson Factory Tour.
« on: April 05, 2014, 05:53:38 PM »
My wife & I are taking a road trip through Arkansas then swinging up through Memphis. I don't know if any basses are built at this factory, but I'm going to check it out. Two years ago, we were in Nashville, only to find out that the factory tour had moved to Memphis after the flood. I hear the Nashville tour wasn't much. We are staying at a hotel just across the street from the Gibson facility off of Beale Street.

Has anyone given one of these a good test drive? How does it handle a Mudbucker? I've been kinda keeping my eye open for a lighter rig, now that I'm at the far upper range of middle age............ ;D  Any comments?

The Outpost Cafe / Obscure Tunes in Everyday Places
« on: December 18, 2013, 06:09:12 PM »
The other day, I was wandering  around in my local Walgreens, trying to find "who knows what!" Then what to my wandering ears should I hear on their elevator music channel? The Animal Trainer & the Toad by Mountain. I don't think I've ever heard that anywhere but on vinyl. I got to thinking about it a bit, I've heard quite a few songs in DR's offices & such that I never thought they'd play on the radio. Different Gary Moore tunes ETC.... Anybody else noticed this lately??

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Modified Low Impedance Pickups??
« on: December 07, 2013, 07:59:04 AM »
I noticed this on Ebay, listed as bass pickups. One is a guitar pickup, but it has multiple wires coming out of it instead of two. Everything else looks like it came off of a Les Paul Bass. I wonder if they were rewound?? Specials from the Kalamazoo factory??

These don't come up very often, there happens to be two listed at the same time. Both in decent shape..............

Neither seller is willing to deal with shipping, mine came on a Conway semi. Luckily there were four neighbors home to help lift the pallet off of the truck.

This bass looks pretty nice for the asking price. The only flag I see is some signs of modification on the plastic back plate. I wish I needed it! Complete with a "Tilt-O-Matic" 2 point bridge!  :P
