The Bass Zone / Re: Yamaha went shopping for more than just Gibson!
« on: May 11, 2018, 07:41:35 AM »
Yamaha knows how to build solid reliable products AND because they are an ACTUAL MI manufacturing group and not a bunch of outside investors expecting unreasonable returns, I expect that they will support the legacy products as best they can too. Honestly, I'm surprised Ampeg has limped along this long under the Loud banner. It seemed like it was one failed product after the next for almost two decades and because of production problems, even their best selling amps were often deleted. I was hoping Yamaha would buy Gibson, but this is a MUCH better consolation prize for bassists.

Nick Cave is one of those guys like Bob Dylan; there's so much there and as an added bonus, the man has an amazing voice. Good stuff.

I thought of you and your love for the pickups. They probably are the same and they're awesome. I'd love to put one in place of a Gibby mini-bucker in an Epi EB and see what it could do.

Fender Basses / Re: Advice needed - 70s P neck on a new Aerodyne body?
« on: April 16, 2018, 11:48:43 AM »
Received the body. Very nice and light weight. But it's drilled for a side jack. I didn't ask for that. It's visible in the secont pic but I didn't notice.

MJT offers to make me another body.

I'm not sure what to do. First, I don't want to wait another 3 months. And I don't know if I'll get a 4lbs. ash body. And I already paid a total of $183 for shipping to Israel + VAT + fees, I'll have to pay that again for another body. And I'll have to ship the current body back to the US. All that adds up to almost the cost of a new body.

Any advice? Should I just live with the side jack hole?

Come on, make fun of me for ordering a relic and complaining it's not perfect.

FYI, the very first run of Aerodynes have a side-jack. I prefer it FWIW.

I work next door to Guitar Center and occasionally drop in. I played a new 2220 yesterday and LOVED it. I'm not a fan of short scale, but I had NO issues playing it. The pickups give it great bite without being thin or tinny sounding and the weird phasey tones I could get by varying the volume knobs were too cool.  No fret buzz either until I really laid into it. Bonus: soloing the bridge sounds VERY much like a Stingray.

I'm not worried about the reset at all, just commenting that I think it had that in addition to the other major repairs. It had been in the music store I got it from for a LONG time and it's still acclimating to my house and the action is moving very slightly, but it feels like either it's changing more to my liking or I'm just becoming more comfortable with it. I'm still varying my techniques and working on my intonation before I try to build much speed. Volume is no problem. Just like when I'm plugged in, I have two settings: loud and off.

Try to take it easy on the old girl. I know some guys who do slap exclusively use nylon strings. Those can work well but will be less versatile for other styles.

I like the sound of nylon, but it came with steel and I want to see how I do with them. I'm not going to be rockabilly beating it or truthfully, taking it out that much. The repair is old and stable, but it's been BADLY broken in the past. The neck looks like it was also reset when the other repairs were performed. You can't really see it in the pic, but's led a HARD life. We bonded over war wounds, LOL.

Using a bow can be daunting. Even if you don't think classical technique is necessary for your musical goals, it's a very efficient way of establishing fundamental technique for position and intonation purposes. At the same time, I'm guessing Willie Dixon never tried getting through a baroque concerto.

I'll get to arco eventually. I just want to get to know her first.

Congrats on scoring a good deal on a Juzek. Is this your first double bass?

Yes. I have played borrowed ones here and there over the years, but this is the first one that's mine. It made me feel good when the lady in the store asked me how many other double basses I had.

Since you're the psycho bass guy, does that mean you'll be using it for psychobilly music?

Funny thing is, the guitarist in my new doom-punk band asked the very same thing! I guess so now! It slaps pretty well. I even had them adjust the action just a bit higher on the E because my normal playing was bouncing it off the fingerboard. The in-house luthier kept saying he couldn't believe how hard my attack was having never had one. No wonder my tone on electric is so bright! They had a bow, but not yet...

Both non-Fenders in the pic are new. The 5-string on the left is a Chinese-made Peavey Grind. I needed a cheaper bass for gigging and fell in love with the tone and playability. The double-bass is a 1930's German-made Juzek, solid construction. It's had some MAJOR repairs over the years; looks like the right shoulder was completely caved in at some point, but it has great tone and plays amazing. Like me, it's scarred but loud. I got it and the stand for less than half what plywood Chinese uprights are going for. I'm tickled.

Gibson Basses / Re: Dire financial situation at Gibson?

I'm no expert but would'nt consumer products run at higher cost in product development than musical instruments do.

They do, but they also make much higher profit margins. There are only so many ways that costs can be cut making a guitar before the drop in quality erodes the retail price point as well.  Consumer products cost more to develop but once they are developed, can be made in bulk in contract factories in Asia for very high wholesale and retail margins. Henry saw the cash that Fender raked in on its branded accessories and wanted that pie too, but bit off way more than he could chew.

I'm so scary looking, they're usually very relieved that I haven't tried to kidnap and kill them. It makes things a LOT easier.

Maybe Rob needs to start work on an Epiphone Bass Book!

That's not a bad idea! There are few Epi's out there that area rarer than their Gibson ancestors: the Epi LP standard.
