Bass Amps & Effects / Phil Jones C2
« on: October 28, 2020, 12:03:51 PM »
A friend in the States recently posted a pic and I noticed he was using some weird little Phil Jones cabs . So I went down that rabbit hole and noticed a little cab with two 5 in speakers . 200 watts , 12.5 x8x11 , 40Hz to 15Khz and decided it's just what I need .
I'm just looking at this for home rehearsal , my gigging gear is kept separate . I was quite happy using a little Ampeg 210AV , but now I'm hooked on this little thing . I'll power it with a mini GK MB 200 .
It's ordered , but apparently there's been a run on them . It'll eventually arrive .

Other Bass Brands / Riverhead Unicorn ?
« on: October 19, 2020, 12:48:09 PM »
One popped up on the local kijiji . It was up before , I looked and for some reason passed on it . Popped up again and I might go for it this time around .
Definitely a guilty pleasure bass , they're said to be reasonably well made . Apparently they never resurfaced after the factory burned down . Fairly rare now .
Not expensive .

Any opinions ... big bodied shortscale , modelled on the Gretsch .
I haven't had a big hollowbody since I sold the Rivoli a couple of years ago . Not expensive , this looks like it might be fun . Might tide me over until a big bat winged Harmony H22 comes my way ... I won't lose money on it .

Gibson Basses / Gibson "Slingshot" strap !
« on: September 12, 2020, 06:05:55 AM »
Anyone tried these ?
Apparently there's hidden elastic that enables you to change the length of the strap while you're in the midst of that interpretive dance during your bass solo .
I think this was developed by the same creative team of mad genius that created robo tuners .
Now the regular price seems a little steep , although in some reviews they do say the leather smells quite nice .
I have a chance to pick up a used one at a more than fair price .
I'm tempted ...

Bass Amps & Effects / GB Service
« on: September 04, 2020, 06:15:25 AM »
I still have a GenzBenz Streamliner and am thinking of getting it serviced . It was designed by Andy Field and apparently he is still servicing them so I think I should take advantage of that . I do love that amp . Warm , dark , and tubey , or you can run it clean . 900 watts , shit ton of headroom .

Anybody here had him do work ? I've heard his turnaround is usually surprisingly fast .

Other Bass Brands / Close call
« on: August 31, 2020, 04:19:45 PM »
Got a pm from an old friend yesterday telling me about a Vox teardrop bass for sale in Bridgewater , about an hour's drive from Halifax .
I was pretty sure it was a reissue . But down that rabbit hole I went and tried to quickly learn as much as I could about them . I saw the Rolling Stones first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show and was forever scarred watching Brian Jones play a Vox .
Some friends have told me about cutting the horns off a bass to try and achieve that look . Never went that far myself but I understand .
In the end I decided not to get it . It was definitely a reissue . I was glad to do the research .
And this morning discovered the bass quickly sold . Asking price was $699 Cdn , I don't know what it sold for .
And would not be surprised to see me pick one up at some future time . My inner fifteen year old still thinks they're cooler than hell .
Pic from the net , but it looked just like this ...

A uke Bass just popped up on the local kijiji . I've had an Ashbory for around a year now , it's a guilty pleasure , fun to play .
This looks like it could be too .
Already got far too much stuff . Herself , when showed the ad said " well that's cute"

Bass Amps & Effects / My bar room companion
« on: August 13, 2020, 04:33:12 PM »
So I'm slightly retired but still do a couple of gigs every week . We're back to business here in NS . I'm hauling stuff in and out of the car , and back out the door so I like lightweight and modular . Mostly play mid sized rooms and generally am not in the PA so I have to fill the room .
Mostly playing blues and roots gigs so we're not real loud , but still a good volume .
In the old days it was tubes and fridges .
Now it's Class D amps and cabs I don't mind lifting .
So Bergantino has been a godsend . Great cabs , loved them so much I bought a little Forte head , but still have the old Liner if I want something a little darker and warmer .

I had my eye out for years , hoping I might see one . I didn't want to buy one from Tokyo or Australia .
And then one popped up in Toronto .
Guilty pleasure .
I tend to use shortscales these days , but most of my bass playing was on upright or longscale bassas . This is a re-issue from around 2000 , and it is 34 in .
This might be the ultimate Japanese surf bass .
