Rickenbacker Basses / More changes
« on: January 05, 2022, 02:10:25 PM »
They’re bringing back the skunk stripe and going down to a single truss rod .
They’ve been doing some adventurous stuff recently .

Gotta say I thought they looked good when I saw the pics .

Bass Amps & Effects / Gain pedals
« on: December 19, 2021, 06:49:22 AM »
Since I’ve been fooling around with the BassVI I’m starting to think that some pedal overdrive might be fun . This will be more for fun at home than for gigs . The gigs require an warm old school thump and I have that pretty much covered .
So I was looking at various pedals and just discovered this the other day . Andy Field reunited with Jeff Genzler and Scott Andres to come up with it . He said it was like getting the old band back together .
It has four different drive levels , and high and low pass filters . The layout looks simple and intuitive for a fairly sophisticated pedal .
I’m still in the research phase , I’ll probably get something after Christmas …

Gibson Basses / Mod bar for three point
« on: November 15, 2021, 05:05:06 PM »
Will this improve the old three point ? I’ll be changing strings soon on the SG and Jr basses . I’ll be putting Gibson Britewires on both so there’s no worry about silk going over the bridge posts .

Nice to see this forum back , I’ve missed checking in here .
I’m just grabbing gear and heading off to the old dive for the Sunday jam , but I’m happy to see this return .

The Bass Zone / Millimetric
« on: November 01, 2021, 04:56:37 AM »
I just came across a builder from Montreal , doing things a little differently . Mostly guitars although there is a bass model . I like the bridge design . Some have a clear cover over the control cavity so you can see inside . Simple clean design .
He’s taking orders again .

Other Bass Brands / New Dano
« on: October 20, 2021, 05:29:09 AM »
I’ve been a Dano aficionado for many years . I bought one of the first Longhorn reissues and it eventually became my primary gigging instrument . I initially did not like the short scale , today I prefer it . There was initially a run of short scale DC basses made for the Chicago Music Exchange . I immediately wanted a shortscale DC , but not the hassles of international orders . About ten months later I saw that Long&McQuade were offering a shortscale DC .
So I immediately placed an order . And was hoping for a quick delivery . It turned into over six months . Recently I began hearing of guys in the States getting new short DCs and realized the new stock was finally in from Korea . So it was not going to be much longer .
Got the email from L&M last night . Picking it up this morning . I’ll have my nose pressed up against the front door when they open .
Dano’s are weird things , but I’ve come to love them . Featherweight , tough as nails . And they can thump . My inner Joey Spampinato is very happy .

Gibson Basses / NBD !
« on: October 04, 2021, 08:44:04 AM »
Found an SG bass for a good price , and couldn’t help myself . I’ve come to seriously love my DC Jr . The bass is almost like new , the truss rod nut is slightly worn down though , but it should be easy to find a new nut and replace it . Previous owner had the nose down on the bridge , but there’s no lifting . I’ve reset it . The neck is somewhat chunkier than the Jr , but comfortable . Not crazy about the strings that are on it , I’m going to order some Gibson Brites and try those for a while . I trust they were the strings that came on my Jr . It might well wind up with some LaBella flats eventually .
First impressions are good , I think I’m going to like it .

Fender Basses / Bass VI
« on: August 19, 2021, 06:51:34 AM »
A Squier Bass VI popped up in our local kijiji , I dawdled and it quickly sold , and then I was thinking I really should have immediately bought the thing . And then discovered a slightly used (rented once) one at my local L&M .
Decided to rent it for a month , it’s just over a dollar a day , and after one day I’m pretty sure I’m going to keep it .
The originals are rare and expensive so I’m quite happy Squier give you a cheap alternative . Fit and finish are fine , plays well , sounds great .
Some say these need heavier strings and that sometimes the bridge saddles have to be reversed for intonation , but so far I’m happy with the factory setup .
I’ll probably never use it for the gigs I do , but it will be a wonderful guilty pleasure at home .

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Help with old Hofner
« on: July 14, 2021, 11:57:11 AM »
I have a 70 blade pickup Hofner and the truss rod seems odd .
Does this look right , I bought a 7mm wrench but it doesn’t fit .
The neck has become detached , and will have to be reset , but I will have to get the truss rod adjustable before I get that done .
Any help or advice appreciated .

Other Bass Brands / Acinonyx
« on: May 15, 2021, 11:10:22 AM »
Nordstand has been selling a funky little shortscale they call the Acinonyx . Almost ordered one last night , came to my senses at the last minute . But they’re funky . The overall look has that mid 60’s Italian influence , and true to form they have a scad of buttons . Eight , in fact .

They’ve only got  some black/tort ones left it seems , until the next shipment comes in . It might be a while .

Gibson Basses / Gibson straps
« on: January 26, 2021, 04:11:27 PM »
I tend to haunt the local kijiji musician's classifieds , and sometimes it pays off . I just picked up two Gibson "New Vintage" straps for $70 . L&M , the local music shop , sell them for $150 each .
Almost brand new , I don't think they've ever been sweaty . Couldn't resist , the seller had two ,  I bought both .
Nice heavy duty straps , although I do tend to favour fairly light basses .
