The Outpost Cafe / Us , on video
« on: April 25, 2024, 04:31:04 PM »
We have a little side project called The Spurs , mostly instrumental , mostly Mexican music. This is from our third gig , in my favourite dive downtown.

They’ve released pics of the 4005 reissue. Said to be priced just under 5 thou. Expected to first arrive this summer.

The Outpost Cafe / The dead of winter
« on: February 04, 2024, 05:54:08 PM »
We’ve had several systems stall here , about 80cm of snow so far this weekend , another 20 tonight through the morning. My favourite dive even had to cancel most gigs this weekend , and up in Cape Breton it’s worse.
I’m stiff from shovelling and running the snowblower. Heavy winds so it blows right back in after you clear it.
The roads are a mess.
Feeling like I’ve had enough.

Other Bass Brands / Gretsch , a big old orange one
« on: November 29, 2023, 04:13:16 PM »
It looks like I just bought an orange G5123B. Herself loves big orange Gretsches. Mentioned it the other day and I did a google search just for fun. I must have done the same search a dozen times before. Found several for sale , but was taken by one in Weymouth Mass. Talked it over with Herself and put in an offer.
It was accepted.
Shouldn’t take too long to arrive. I’ve been looking over these for some years.

Bass Amps & Effects / Barefaced
« on: November 14, 2023, 10:51:12 AM »
Barefaced seem to have a great reputation , but are rarely seen on this side of the pond. I’ve been watching for a One Ten to surface for a while now and one popped up in Quebec. Still pricey , but less than importing one.
It will be the rehearsal cab , something small and simple to haul around , loud enough for band practice. But we’re not real loud by any means. This looks like the perfect fit , going by reviews.
I hope it’s going to work out.

Bass Amps & Effects / New stuff from Ampeg !
« on: September 21, 2023, 11:15:31 AM »
Well this doesn’t happen often, Yamaha seem to have pretty much left things be after acquiring Ampeg but there’s new stuff available!

Bass Amps & Effects / High & Low Pass Filters
« on: August 19, 2023, 04:54:09 PM »
My favourite amp has built in high & low pass filters but I’ve been bypassing the front end and using a tube preamp so the nerd in me thinks maybe I should add the filters. I’ve got a lightly used Broughton Hi&Low filter on the way.

More knobs.

And I’m curious to see if the change will be subtle or in my face.

I was surprised to discover Broughton is just one guy making stuff. He’s managed to have found world wide acclaim.

The Outpost Cafe / Mike Finnigan
« on: August 11, 2023, 05:41:26 AM »
I found this memory today , and cracked up. Mike Finnigan was a long time keyboard player with Bonnie Raitt , and many others …

"I told my then-future-in-laws when I was dating my wife, he said 'Well, what do you want to do with your life?'
And I said 'Well, I'm doing it!'
And he said 'Oh my God!'
I said 'Well, I also write a little, so if this doesn't work out, I can fall back on my poetry!' "

Bass Amps & Effects / And the little Aguilar rig is done
« on: July 24, 2023, 08:22:10 AM »

I picked up an Aguilar SL112 cab some time ago , they’re voiced quite differently from their earlier cabs , with quite a prominent mid range. My plan was just to use it at home. And I started hankering for a little ToneHammer head for it. There are no stocking dealers in town , and I was after a lightly used one. I thought it might even involve finding one in the US and dealing with the exchange and duties and whatnot. This would be my home practice rig , we spend much of our days looking after my wife’s mom , I have a nice little amp there for practice.
I eventually found one for a good price in Pennsylvania , and was willing to add up the exchange shipping and duties. It sat in Customs for about a week , and then slowly meandered down to Nova Scotia. I kept it at the in-laws for a while plugged into my tiny Phil Jones cab there , and quite like the head. So now it’s home and paired with the Aguilar cab. It’s a fine little rig! I seem to oscillate between giving the mids a good scoop and cantering things. I’m getting to know it , and am happy to have picked it up.

Gibson Basses / SG bass question
« on: July 13, 2023, 01:13:41 PM »
The SG bass was in production from 2005-14. When did it resume production after that?
It’s still on the website so I assume it’s still produced , I know L&M still carry stock.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Tbird pickups ?
« on: May 20, 2023, 05:10:50 AM »
Some time ago I saw a picture of a cheap Ibanez Talman that someone had dropped a Tbird pickup in. Now I love that little DC Jr and thought that Talman might make an interesting project. Where’s the best place to source a Tbird pickup and surround?
It looks like I might be picking up a Talman on kijiji and this little project might begin to happen. Apparently there’s little taper on the tone knob , so that will be replaced , and the Talman can get a bit neck heavy so I might be picking up some lightweight tuners.
I think the reason I like the Talman is because it looks like it was inspired by some of the Paul Barth designs of the late 50’s.
This should be fun.

Other Bass Brands / Starstream
« on: May 04, 2023, 05:50:50 AM »
A classic textbook case of bad decisions , there’s still some Starstreams for sale for £179 at Guitar Guitar in the UK !
I’ve read reviews that absolutely loved them , but they were a total flop in the market place.

I doubt they’d ship to NS.

Bass Amps & Effects / Jad Freer Sisma
« on: March 20, 2023, 05:15:37 AM »
Another company from Italy , small run hand built , and they say they’ve managed to capture that warm tubey goodness of a B15. With a 700 watt Class G back end. Will this become the new grail?
I’ve read some very positive experiences from the UK.
Not much presence in North America yet. I’m curious.
