Gibson Basses / Parts hunters
« on: November 22, 2008, 05:02:55 PM »
Anyone know where to get one of the repro EB3 lead pup rings?  They seem to come with the Allparts pup, and the SG bass, but I wonder if anyone is selling them alone. I also seem to recall that they are not exact for the old ring, no?

Is is me or is ebay just brimming with EB3 varitone set-ups and old Tbird parts?

..but I didn't.  I am very curious, but it would be just throwing $50 that I could throw elsewhere.  Anyone curious?

Fender Basses / Faking 80s Basses?
« on: September 16, 2008, 01:26:10 PM »
I just had a strange experience with my local shop.  I have been doing business there for several years, and usually with the owner.  I brought some stuff in to consign, and he wasn't there but one of his guy was.  I brought in an 82 P that I bought as a wreck and have had for around seven or eight years.  It has a clean neck, and an oversprayed body but most of the original finish, and I also replaced the bridge.  In general a nice clean if re-done to some extent bass.  They went over it and the other stuff I brought in but never asked me what was up for particulars.  The guy starts telling me I have a refinished 90s Mexican bass, and someone ripped me off, they pulled the neck and guard and it has Mexican stickers. I said the "oh really" thing and just took it home.  Now, I know it isn't - besides the 82 date, and ground lug/routing like an 80s body, I paid very little for it.  It would have cost more to fake it than what I bought it for.  But is anyone faking late 70s basses out of Mexican basses?  Or, as I suspect, the guy knew some stuff didn't match and was trying to get me to sell it straight out for peanuts?

Any reason why this wouldn't work for the switch?

The Bass Zone / What is the going rate on a fret job?
« on: September 11, 2008, 03:47:42 PM »
This would be for a vintage Fender, so not a case of buying a new neck is cheaper.  Also, previous owner somewhere along the line did a real amateur fret job, so there will be some prep work involved to the board.  No hard core damage, just a few slot chips and maybe cleaning or filling slots to make up for it.  What do you expect?

Gibson Basses / Needing some measurements
« on: July 31, 2008, 04:48:10 PM »
If anyone has an Evertilt and a ruler handy, I need to check some measurements.  I gave away my last one to somebody on the old pit, and wouldn't you know I need to improvise.  Can anyone give me - metric or imperial as close as you can - the width (B) , height (A) , and stud spread (C) of one?

Other Bass Brands / What is the deal on these?
« on: July 07, 2008, 08:05:00 AM »
Anyone played one?  Is this decent, or crap?  Has too many of the hallmarks of a modern Tbird as opposed to a 60s one for my tastes, but by looks I am curious.

Gibson Basses / An old friend resurfaces

This is the EB6 I passed on 20 years ago.  It is in the same shape now as then.  Last time I saw it, the price was less than a grand.  The celeb mods mystified me then and still do.  Ish.

Gibson Basses / The Schaller 460 - Too thick?
« on: March 11, 2008, 05:51:19 PM »
Some feel the mass of the 460 makes it impossible to mount on an EB2, without modifying the bridge, or even removing the saddles.  Raises the action way too high.  PShaw!  Just break out a Swiss army knife or chisel, and...
