Looks like a poorly applied waterslide decal.
The guy who bought the same bass twice — first in 1977 and again in 2023

Hmmm.. to me it looks like like any other pearl inlay, where you see the edges around the putty/filler?

Yes, it's a square piece of m.o.p with rounded of edges.
And it was sprayed black with the E masked off.

This method is much easier than cutting the inlay plus chamber to a complicated shape.
