list your fave and why.

i 'll take moe tucker. very primative and idiosyncratic style with no cymbals, very little snare, lots of toms and a kick drum hit with a stick. in short the perfect dummer for the velvet underground's 'sound'.

she also does well on her recordings with other bands and has not changed her style over the years. btw does anyone else think that VU were just a more revved up psychedelic version of the shaggs. ;)

That's hard, but I vote for Tony Williams & Jack Dejohnette

Tony Williams made an art form of playing the cymbals. Jack Dejohnette is just crazy. Bill Bruford & Billy Cobham are up there as well for me.

I like a lot of different drummers for different reasons

Terry Bozzio
Bill Bruford
Pat Mastelotto
Denny Carmassi
Tommy Lee
Bobby Caldwell (first single kick drummer I ever saw doing quads)
Charlie Watts (still one of the masters of "the beat")
Telling tales of drunkenness and cruelty

Well, you can't call Keith Moon a drummer. He's on a league of its own.

But I love:

- Kenn(e)y Jones  - Small Faces era
- Zak Starkey - Who and Oasis
- Steve White - former Weller drummer

Kenney is the best pop drummer. Nice, original and always those strange fills when a number is over.
Zak is just Keith, but better for a normal band
Steve is a great drummer, he can do everything. From simple things to strange jazz fills. He's the Premier test drummer:)

+1 :) There are a few others, but you have provided what I would put at the top of my list.

Here's mine:

Richie Hayward - greasy/swampy stuff
David Girabaldi - funk
Miche Pouliot - roots-rock/alt country
Steve Gadd - pretty much any studio-recorded stuff
Bonham - Rock
Paul Brochu - Jazz/Fusion
Neil Peart - Prog. Rock
"I think it's only proper that I play until the last note of a set, then fall over and die. The band won't have to play an encore and they'll still get paid for the gig" (Dr. John)

Ian Paice - the perfect mix of musicality, a driving beat without being heavy-handed, Buddy Richnesque swing and just enough flash to be always entertaining. Vastly underrated (and I haven't heard a drummer yet who in his heart of hearts hasn't admitted to me: "Of course Paice is a much better drummer than Bonham, but it is so much more difficult to replicate Paice's style ...").

I'd like to add Mick Fleetwood...

Always comes up with something original...even on an otherwise bland pop tune.

If I had to make a favorites list, Tre Cool would probably be at the top.

When I was a kid I was impressed with Cozy Cole's drumming. Here's an old clip with Cozy Cole and Gene Krupa.

Yeah, I remember that guitarist on the left from some late sixties outfit, I think they were called "Shiney & The Crazy Diamonds", one of them died, the others did quite well for themselves so I've heard. Had this one big hit: "A Mother Pig in the Hall".
