The Outpost Cafe / Re: My first essay
« on: October 08, 2015, 12:05:37 PM »
Congratulations. A worthy and much needed service. I've worked on some of this on my own for various institutions and it has been well recieved.  One very interesting aspect is that it has been used in alzheimers and dimentia therapy/wards and by using popular music from the patients past or youth, they are able to be in the present moment and know the lyrics and melodies. I worked on a project like this in Japan and was surprised and so happy to see the reaction.  One good way of getting off to a start while you are getting these A levels etc. is on your own approaching some smaller clinics, or any stores or restaurants etc. and suggest a program of music, sounds etc. that they might program in to their place of business. Even for free as part of your own education. Best of fortune to you on this.

Hmmm..there was a lazer disc of that 'Doors' show at the Concertgebouw? Might like to see that except i have no access to lazer disc player. It was just Manzarek, Krieger and Densmore. Manzarek did some of the vocals, but mostly instrumentals.

I saw the Airplane in 1968 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and they were in top form instrumentally and vocally. I was not under the influence of anything except the glorious bass sound Casady was producing. Actually they sounded great in that masterful concert hall and their engineers got it perfect. Living in Europe in those days there were plenty of opportunities to see bands like The Who, Hendrix, Cream etc. I get the whole Entwhistle thing, always a bit too trebly for me and Bruce muddy live. Casady's system blew them all away as far as bass sound, balance in that live setting. I had been playing bass already 3 years by then and on that night I realized the religious connotations of the bass and I converted 100%.  (Btw that same night the Doors were on the bill in an aborted form after Morrison oD'd in stage dancing to Plastic Fantastic Lover!)

Hmmm... Tough one. A good Jazz (light weight , balanced , good feel and sound). How many T Birds do you have? You have to have all facets in your arsenal. A good Jazz covers a lot of basses.

I like the Lindy Fralin P's ( he'll work close with you too to get what you want). Also the Fender Custom Shop P's and J's are pretty nice as well. You can check them out most likely in any music shop that stocks their new American Standard passive P an J basses. There is a little sticker on the puck guard stating those pickups.

The Bass Zone / Re: Nuts, and zero frets, Oh my
« on: July 17, 2015, 11:52:29 AM »
I always thought when first seeing the brass nuts in the early 70's that the idea was to have even sound open and fretted and no wear and tear. Bruce Johnson told me he would not build a bass without a zero fret. The Hofner bass always had them. Inhave a Yamaha BB 2024 which has some very modern approaches on body build, string angle through body AND using the same material for both frets and the nut. The sound is definitly even open and fretted.

In the Stewmac article and the website for these fellows there is no mention of bass anywhere I could find. Strange that....

I see they have got the retail at $1,530. for the Hillman ((single pup) and $1,580. For the Newark St. (2 pup).  The Newark St when first released what, several years ago were made in n Korea and retailed for around $1,100.  Does Fender still own Guild?

Me too! But...then why not the 200? You get something that dare I say covers a lot of bases both practice and gigs. It's $100 more ( but w/ the special 15% you can most likely negotiate=$339. And 34 lbs vs 22. Hmmmm

I was recently trying our some of the new Rickenbacker, Shecter and Yamaha BB Series basses and a Fender Jazz. I just plugged into the nearest amp, it being a Fender Rumble 100. At first I thought well, these are pretty nice basses and all sounding good. I tried out some of the options on this rather small combo amp and was quite surprised how versatile it was. Impressed with the amp, there was a Rumble 200 next to it and that was that much more being 200 watts. I had my Gibson TBIV getting back from a setup and that sounded glorious on both as well. I remember the original Rumble series and not impressed. Could this new series have benefitted from the Genz Benz technology that Fender 'inherited'?

Bass Amps & Effects / Peavey TKO-65 in AMPEG Rocket Out!
« on: July 09, 2015, 03:49:34 PM »
I posted several months ago about being intrigued with the Peavey TKO-65. Well came across one the other day at a great deal and all in good physical condition and everything else in order. It is on the heavier side, but does have wheels. So putting this along side by side and comparing with my (also heavy) Ampeg Rocket 100....I prefer the Peavey. Somehow the natural tones of various Jazz, Precision,Celinder and Gibson Les Paul Signature, EB-0 and TBIV basses were preferable on all of them. This was a ear opening series of 'moments' for me. I don' t at this point need 2 heavier combos as I have several very nice lighter weight amps. So I never thought I would let the Rocket go but thats the way it goes.

Fender Basses / Re: Pino modded his P-Bird

A mudbucker at the base of the neck on a Precision....hmmm. He always gets good tone from what I have seen and heard over the years. There must be rhyme to his reason.  I wonder if it is a TB+with the mudbucker casing?... I did see a recent video of him playing his old Fiesta Precision with just the lowly Precision pups.( The Unidentified Flying Project)

Fender Basses / Re: 70's parts bass

Well done. I can imagine your joy and sense of accomplishment on this 'labor of love'. These days the attributes of light weight and 'buttery' necks, balance do not play second place to sound but with age and back issues defintly keep it on your shoulders or in your lap.

Gibson Basses / Re: Badbird II samples in the mail!
« on: June 20, 2015, 11:33:57 AM »
If there are any minor perfections necessary after this/these initial BB2 samples count me in also for a replacement on my '01. I' ll even go for the nickle/ chrome and swap the keys out for nickle tuners. Already going to have Lull make me up a pair of his replacement pickups. Was going to have black covers but now that I saw this may as well go all the way.

Bass Amps & Effects / PEAVEY TKO 65
« on: May 25, 2015, 05:06:56 PM »
Walking through the park this afternoon i heard some music from afar. What caught my ear was the bass tone cutting through the dense trees and through the meadow. I followed my ears and came upon the shaggy group of guitars a keyboard and drums. The bass player plating an old frankenstein Fender etc. bass through a Peavey TKO 65... Wow..he put that amp through some hoops, then slowed down with some pure tone.  Afterwards I got talking and he let me have a go. Playing my own partcular style and beeing out in the open this combo covered a lot of ground. Gonna get me one
