Gibson Basses / My Epi Explorer has arrived
« on: June 20, 2008, 07:44:18 AM »
Bass is here in its custom built super case (which I will be modifying into a fold in half card table). I have managed to track down the last Epi Explorer case in Oz which has been ordered. Aus$200 (about EUR120) delivered.

Epiphone Explorer bass
#: U02053181

Unsung Plant, Korea
May 2002
Production Number: 3181

Body is 4 piece. Looks like either basswood or Poplar. With a veneer of what I guess is the traditional Korina on the front and back.
Fitted Maple neck, spliced below the nut.
Bow in the neck which I will adjust in the morning. Balances pretty good, neck feels nice. Wide but good. Build quality is about the same as my Epi Allen Woody bass which is also from the Unsung factory. I would give it about 8 out of ten.

Bridge has a 1.5 mm gap under the back only. quite bizzare to see to be honest. I will take some pics before I sort this one out.
Bridge is a Gotoh 201.

Need sleep, I will post pics and more if anyone is interested  as soon as I get time.

Other Bass Brands / Lawsuit era experts, Is this an Ibanez?

Love the binding on the neck

The rear pup looks very much like a smaller version of the pups on a mates Lawsuit era Ibanez T-Bird.
*(Edit Jan 2009: Tis is not an Ibanez pickup from what I've learned since posting this originally. I have been told it is a Teisco)

This bass is just beautiful to play and sounds amazing. Pic is Dennis from the Streamliners playing. He plays with his thumb, index and middle fingers kind of like he is playing an acoustic guitar. The above pic is a good illustration of his technique.  Pretty unusual to my eyes.

If you wanna hear what Dennis' Ibanez sounds like in a song or 2.

Gibson Basses / Explorer bass MSG
« on: June 15, 2008, 10:20:16 PM »

Anyone know if its an explorer with what looks like a dimarzio P pup added, or a destroyer with added soapbars?
Apparently the bass player is Chris Glen. Seems to be argument on You Tube about weather its from a 1981 show or a 1983 show. I guess if its 1981 then the bass has to be a destroyer.

love the death stare at 1.01  :D

Fender Basses / Help with P/J bass wiring
« on: June 15, 2008, 05:32:04 AM »
Hi guys, I am refitting a 70's P bass which has been modified with  Dimarzio pickups in a P/J configuration and Japanese mini pots including new wiring. I have had some custom pickups made (Brierleys) to replicate mid 60's P and Jazz pickups but I'm not sure of the wiring or values of pots, cap etc.  I would guess that the pots should be 250k? But I dont know if that should be the case for the tone pot as well? Or what value the cap should be. I'm after a classic mid 60's sound, specifically from the P pup but since there is a big hole in the body for the Jazz I might as well just follow through and get myself a bridge Jazz sound happening as well.

I'm thinking CTS 250k pots at the moment. And thats about as far as I've got.

All opinions and advice happily accepted.

I figured that we have all at one time or another been blown away by the talents of someone that we got to share a stage or studio with (famous or not). Lets see some recognition in this place for non bass playing worthy talent!
