Title: SG Bass Crack
Post by: Droombolus on March 21, 2015, 04:57:30 AM
Would this be a relic ?  ;)  On the day of Andy Fraser's passing a crack surfaced in the neck/headstock joint of my SG .......... 8)

Any one ever seen this before ? And if so, will it end up in a vintage Gibson headstock break ? Just wondering .....

Eddies in the time-space continuum?

Seriously, I wonder why. Truss rod issue?

I had a similar issue with the 20/20 neck I just replaced, I always wondered what the cause could have been. I assumed it may have been hit against something rather hard. The maple being pretty tough, the finish cracked before it did. The unusual nut this bass has, consists of two leveling screws on each end & a center jack screw to raise & lower it. The strings are fed through holes in the nut. The guy that installed my replacement neck noticed that the center jack screw was tightened too much, it pushed against the truss rod enough to crack the back of the neck. He made a shim to correctly adjust the height without using the center jack screw. I know the situation is different than yours,  but sometimes you have to think outside of the box to figure out what the cause is...................... Must be Andy Fraser........... :vader:

Truss-rod issue was my guess too. I had to "customise" a washer for support because the TR nut was slowely eating its way through the wood on which it rested. It's a 2005 Standard and the TR nut in both of my 2007 SG Supremes rest on metal so maybe this was contruction flaw that was corrected later on ?

Anyway, because of the TR instability I had already retired her for gigs. I hope it doesn't crack any further though  :-\, because I still use her at home a lot, but since it's a Gibson it probably will ......  ;)

No idea if the later change was due to problems like yours. But considering the price of a new one, you ought to look into having it repaired.

I love that Bass, even had a TRC made with her name on it   ;D, but she's a regular money pit and I'm getting a little tired of throwing good money after bad.

I experienced something very similar recently with my '94 Les Paul, and there was just an SG bass on eBay with the same kind of crack. As I'd try to tighten the nut to get the neck a little flatter, the crack would open up more. Took it to my guy Dean Tremont, and he fixed it. I don't recall exactly what the solution was, but it seems to be working.

If the spirit of Andy Fraser is floating around trying to squeeze itself into cracks, they aren't going to be the kind attached to any basses. Drop the b maybe.

Any rants yet about Paul Rodgers not showing up for the funeral? Those two never had much to say to each other since Free days, I remember a recent interview where he was still exasperated about Rodgers' perceived slights of him. Rodgers was either callous or Fraser a drama queen with a chip on his shoulder. Probably both.

Doesn't deter from the fact how melodic a bass player he was, how good a songwriter, that it was brave for him to come out and that  he gave aids and cancer a long hard fight.  I liked this song long before I knew that he and not Robert Palmer had written it, I guess it was an early cry for tolerance:

I haven't seen any rants. And in this case when there was known animosity, I wouldn't expect anything from Rodgers. They last worked together nearly 45 years ago and didn't like each other.

They gigged together at that second Woodstock festival as Free - by all accounts that wasn't a rosy affair either.

The only Frankie Miller I'm familiar with is a country singer. But that was nice.

Frankie was great.

He's had a stroke or two but he's still alive ......... Apparently there were recent plans for a Fraser/Miller project .......

Frankie Miller was a great singer.
His version of Lennon's Jealous Guy is the ultimate version for me. (when you hear this version you know exactly where the Black Crowes got their inspiration)

Yesterday I saw this nice documentary about him on YT

Dave, he is in that Jess Rhoden league of white soul Brit Blues singers from up north. The people who were too young to sing at Woodstock and hence never got as far as their buddy from Sheffield. His greatest European hit was this here:

Accused of being a sell-out, I always liked it for its country roots.

And you might have heard this here from Bob Seger (= stadium rock) because he covered it (Seger was a big Frankie fan and there are similarities between the two, Frankie returns the favor here by covering Seger's Fire Down Below at the end):

Joe Cocker must have been a Frankie Miller or Robert Palmer fan too. Bob Seeger is within the six degrees of separation from Andy also.

Don't think Bonnie Tyler will be on anyone's fave list here, but I always loved Tears, her duet with Frankie ( who also wrote the song )

Hell yeah ! Mrs Droombolus favores the wimpy Bryan Ferry version ( conveniently released after Lennon's death ) but I never budged !

I prefer John Lennon's original version of "Jealous Guy" by far.  There is so much emotion there.  It's really authentic, especially when you consider that he sang some of those later Beatles songs when he was pretty spaced out.  But that wasn't the case when he was doing most of that solo stuff.  Still, I'm all for people covering "Jealous Guy," if they feel like it.  In some cases, the covers are the only versions that people are going to hear.

Yeah, little known fact, "Her Strut" was originally supposed to be "His Strut" but the double entendre' line just doesn't work with the male pronoun. They do respect her but(t) They love to watch her strut. They do respect him but(t) They love to watch him strut?

Yes and no. My first girlfriend had the "Against the Wind" album ... It is too long ago to remember what might have happened, but in any case I always preferred the less somber and more lively "Stranger in Town" album. "Still the Same" is such a lovely song.
