Gibson Basses / Reissue Ripper
« on: September 07, 2009, 09:56:51 AM »
I played a new Ripper in natural with rosewood board the other day, I didn't plug it in so I can't comment on the pickups what I can say is the bass is made of beautiful maple with a nice grain to it. The finish was well done by Gibson bass standards and It played quite well off the wall. I didn't get a price but I will go back and give it a through going over. I liked it a lot better than the Grabber II.

Gibson Basses / My Grabber: I am finally using it !
« on: September 05, 2009, 02:15:03 PM »
A few years ago I bought a black '81 Grabber pretty much just for the KISS thing. There it sat in my bass room I would take it out once and a while and play it on the couch but that was pretty much it. I liked it and enjoyed the way it played, certainly a better bass than I thought when they came out. A few weeks ago the band finally decided to do some KISS so for fun I brought the Grabber to rehearsal. Holy Crap even through my Ampeg B-25 and 1x15 The thing sounded just like KISS Alive ! Even the band was impressed. This bass sits with authourity in the mix, full and agressive, notes jump out on the upper register. The only thing I don't like about the bass is the body size, way to big for me and I am 5'11, Only Gene in those platforms could make this bass look right size!

Ok guys I have a huge itch for a 8 string and very little $ I really like the look of this. Cool silver sparkle finish, Mahogany LP Jr (early EB0) type body. I am thinking of pulling the trigger on this. Anyone ever play one ? Other low budget options ? http://cgi.ebay.com/CARLO-ROBELLI-8-String-bass-with-Active-pick-up-case_W0QQitemZ360181162136QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar?hash=item53dc786098&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Gibson Basses / '74-75 Wine red Grabber, trade for P bass ?
« on: August 09, 2009, 06:35:02 AM »
I have a line on a '74-'75 Grabber in wine red, the guy might take a MIA P for it. I have a very nice unplayed '08 MIA P white with rosewood, tort guard nice flame on the back of the neck. Think it's a good trade ? http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=569437

Posted in another thread about location for a Dimarzio Model G but I thought it deserves a thread of it's own. This worked out great, super easy. The Model G has two screw tabs I just screwed the pickup to the base of the pup cavity and put the cover right over it works great no need for adjustment as the pup sits about as high up as it could go without hitting the strings. The only give away is the center adjustment hole on the '76 cover. Before After

The Outpost Cafe / Witnessed a homicide today
« on: July 16, 2009, 01:13:41 PM »
A bit numb from the experience. While on my lunch break sitting in my van a domestic altercation got out of hand, or was already out of hand by the time it spilled into the street. Might have been 50 feet from my vantage point. I am trying to process just what I have witnessed.

Well it is raining so I headed down tho the shop to do some mundane tasks I have been putting off. First I sorted out the controls on my Bach Bird. While digging in my pickup box for some wire I found a Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounder P pickup, quite a coincedence as I was looking at those online today for my fretless and lamenting that I didn't have the dough.  I could not believe my luck ! So I installed that in my fretless P. Then I turned my attention to the Phoenix, the fragment of a NR Tbird I am restoring. I routed the control cavity the other week so I laid out the controls and drilled the holes for them. It is really almost done I am just waiting for SD to finish the pickup (I had one but it went into the Butcher bird). Next on the list was the pickguard for my JAE Fenderbird.  All in all a nice afternoon and I am feeling quite accomplished.  :)

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Bach bird pickguards
« on: June 27, 2009, 07:10:52 AM »
Here she is all dressed up for Saturday night ! I just installed the PG this morning. I used the Bach PG hole pattern as I didn't want to put more holes in the bass right away. I had to make the "tail" that points to the Bridge a little thicker than a Gibson PG so it would cover the screw hole in the Bach Pattern. I think next time I will follow the Gibson screw pattern. The Bach PG is a bit smaller than the Gibson and the screw holes are farther into my repro PG than I would like. I can't wait to gig this bass tonight !

Fender Basses / Road Worn Jazz neck for my '08 MIA J
« on: May 29, 2009, 12:04:46 PM »
I just bought a Road Worn J neck off the 'bay complete with the vintage tuners ! Late last year I um............. dropped my '08 Jazz at a gig. The neck split out at the heel, cracked through the tuners and the end off the headstock broke off, I repaired it and got it all back together but I have been looking for a new neck. A while ago I played a RW J and was really impressed with the neck and thought that would be just the thing. Should be here next week, I'll give a update once it is installed.
