Fender Basses / Re: Mustang basses... any fans?
« on: June 27, 2016, 08:28:34 AM »
I looked at the website for Ikebe, one of the big Japanese retailers. They have USA & MIM, but also "Fender Japan" - it looks like they are producing a limited number of instruments in Japan, marketed as "Japan Exclusive." (Confusing given that they supposedly put Fender Japan to rest.)

http://www.ikebe-gakki.com/ec/srDispCategoryTreeLink/doSearchCategory/11020J1F000/04-05/4/1 (not sure the link will work)

Ishibashi even has an MB-SD (Mustang Bass, presumably with the Seymour Duncan pickups that the earlier Fender Japan Mustangs came with?) in black, though it's on hold for someone, but it looks like a brand new one.

http://store.ishibashi.co.jp/ec/pro/disp/1/80-321631300 (again not sure the link will work)

Ikebe didn't list any Mustangs, only Precision & Jazz basses.

Gibson Basses / Re: Blue JCS and Blue Allen Woody

Too bad they didn't make a white (as opposed to cream) pickup for the JCS. I'm digging' the Allen Woody though - I've got the standard one - would be nice to have one of each - wonder how much I could get for the red one on trade for the blue? Which begs the question - which retailers will be getting these in the US?

I had an MIJ - white with tortoise pickguard - bought it in Japan while I was living there, around 2004 or so. Only recorded one thing that I can remember - found it to be punchy and rather P-ish:

Here is the entire piece, most recorded with a Tune 8-string - the Mustang only appears in the middle section referenced above:

Sold it when I moved back to the States, kind of regret it - I really liked it! Would love to have a vintage one but would settle for another MIJ, but not high on my list - in fact, there isn't a list right now!

The Outpost Cafe / Re: ...and Lonnie Mack, too

I've only heard the whammy bar story in recent years. It could be true. Never heard it way back when, though.

SRV did back Lonnie on most of the cuts on one of his mid-80s albums.
Looked it up - Strike Like Lightning was the album - I remember liking it, it had then-modern production, etc. - now I would probably gravitate towards the original stuff.

I got into him in the '80s because I loved Stevie Ray Vaughan - wasn't there an album with both of them playing together? I can't remember. I picked up the Wham of the Memphis Man LP because of SRV and listened to it a lot. I especially liked Wham! & Memphis, and thought the Flying V with the Bigsby was so cool!

I also have zero Prince influence, even though he had a huge impact on many of my friends. I'm 45, so was 12 or 13 when he really hit big. I have tried to like him - I never liked any of the hits, tried to listen to some of the more obscure stuff like the Black Album when it was a bootleg, but to me it always sounded like there was something missing. Other musicians that I respect talk about seeing him live and being blown away, so there must be something there, but I haven't felt it myself.

I had never heard that the term "whammy bar" came from Lonnie Mack! Makes sense - it is reference here in this Gibson Lifestyle article.

I'll admit it - I had The Mask on vinyl - bought it when it came out. I wanted to like it and it had its moments but overall I found it disappointing. I guess I was expecting/hoping for something a bit heavier since I was so into Deep Purple & Rainbow at the time - hey, I was just 14! I'll have to go and check it out again on YouTube (vinyl long gone).

Rickenbacker Basses / Re: Cool Rics on eBay

Huh. News to me. The silver (chrome?) letter black TRC is a stock item that goes on the 4004L Laredo. Any idea how many were in that run for Japan?

I don't know how many they made. The only reference I have ever seen was on Björn Eriksson's Ric page, which makes reference to a Japanese magazine article about the 4003VPCBJG and 4003VPCBFG of which there were 24 each, but it is unclear if the 4003JGBT was also limited to that number.

This is the first time I have seen another one!

Niiiice! Sure that's a 2004? I thought 2002 was the last year for black hardware/trim.
Looks like mine - they made a special run of what they called 4003BTJG (though it has both BH & BT) for the Japanese market in 2004 - looks like this seller is in Japan so it makes sense. Mine also has silver lettering on the truss rod cover - not sure if that was standard. I got mine from phlemmy back on the RickResource Forum back around 2009-10.

Gibson Basses / Re: New Gibson ES-LesPaul Bass for 2016

Hiero, the flats are stock, they even specifically mentioned that when it first was shown at the Messe Frankfurt.
Definitely an interesting move to ship it stock with flats. I assumed Chromes because of the color of the silks but I could easily be wrong.

I played one today. Didn't mean to, the guy at the store kind of shoved it on me. Played it through a 2X8 TC Electronics combo (BG250-208?).

A few observations:
1. It sounded nice! Came strung with flatwounds which is kind of surprising in this day and age - looks like they are stock - nice fat sound.

2. The tuners are small open back Hipshots in matte finish - that was weird! Looked very out of place to me - in my opinion they didn't match the aesthetic of the bass.

3. The different pickups didn't sound that different. Neck pup soloed wasn't that different from both pups together, and even the bridge pup soloed wasn't as thin sounding as I would expect, though it's obviously related to the fact that it's strung with flats.

4. My hair is definitely thinning on top.

5. I was much more impressed with the $250 Tobias Toby Deluxe IV - the Les Paul I put down pretty quick, but the Toby I played for 5-10 minutes.

Fender Basses / Re: Fender Telecaster Bass (early 70's) Pots
« on: February 04, 2016, 09:47:35 PM »
The only thing I can think of to add is that there was a Fender Japan version produced for a few years in the mid-'80s for the Japanese market, with some version of the humbucker. That's the one that caught my eye, though I never saw one in person. Interesting to see a couple for sale recently on eBay & Reverb.

Did you intend to post a link to the article?

I don't know if the single coil production extended into 1972 or exactly when in 1972 the humbucker version came out.

Oops! Yes, edited my post above.

Are there early '72 Telecaster Basses with the single-coil pickup? Found this "official" Fender article on the Telecaster Bass - better written than I expected, plus there are some nice pictures.

http://www2.fender.com/experience/guitarchive/the-telecaster-bass/

The Telecaster Bass with the humbucker grabbed my attention when I was in high school - I had a Fender Japan catalog/poster that had one on it - must have been around 1985. Never thought I would end up with one!

Would love to see yours when it is fully restored!

Gibson Basses / Re: Early Les Paul Signature

Just quickly glancing through the text, this person acquired it through an online auction. He doesn't really know much about it, other than it may be the earliest version. He explains some of the differences, but though knowledgable, I don't think he has any more knowledge than the Gibson experts here!
