The Bass Zone / cats & their basses
« on: February 03, 2008, 04:54:30 PM »
We think we own all that gear, or that house, but deep down we know that our cats are just letting us use them for the time being. For example, Sadie, my 12 year old black cat, and my 1975 Alembic Series I doubleneck:

She even lets me use the case:

(I didn't feel right posting cat pictures in a dog thread, so I started this one - post away!)

No, it doesn't take up any space on our server. Embedded or not, YouTube videos are on YouTube's servers. Playing embedded videos hogs bandwidth, but we have plenty of bandwidth and a small membership.

Here's the reason: SMF clearly warns that allowing embedding is a possible security risk. I know some other places allow it, but I'm new at this and learning as I go. When I have enough info to assess the risk and make an informed decision, I may enable it. Or not.
Thanks for the explanation. Being able to embed videos is fun and looks cool, but isn't really necessary in the end.

I found a couple of dog pictures. These are from an Alembic gathering in the San Francisco Bay Area last year. No actual basses in the pictures, but I'm wearing my Alembic t-shirt!

The dog's name is Thor. He did a great job of guarding the tens of thousands of dollars worth of Alembics gathered at the place:

and by the end was just plumb tuckered out:

I was watching the dog show on Animal Planet and saw a beautiful Basenji! I didn't know anything about them before I met Barklessdog.

I think I'm going to start a new thread - it doesn't seem right to me to post cats in a dog thread, even though I love dogs too.

There's no way to embed YouTube videos yet, is there?

Fender Basses / Re: Sheehanize a P/J ??
« on: January 31, 2008, 04:59:42 PM »
I've got an early-'70s Tele bass that the previous owner added a P-pickup to:

(sorry for the bad pic)

Right now, the bass is wired mono. The humbucker is MUCH higher output than the P-pickup, but when you have both pups on 10, the volume is more like the P-pup, and the sound is round and deep, kind of like a Jazz Bass. I still think about having it rewired in stereo, with separate outputs for each pickup - I'm pretty sure that's how Billy Sheehan's was wired as well. That way you can get the booming lows from the humbucker through one amp and the mids and highs from the others. Just something to think about...

I was proud of my "pets and basses" thread at DP3 :'(

Can I start a "Cats & Basses" thread?

I used to lust after those basses! I remember looking at the ads in Guitar Player - one in particular with Scott Thunes, Frank Zappa's bassist at the time. Now I'm feeling all nostalgic...

Gibson Basses / Re: Ralphe Armstrong interview

Great interview! I had only seen him pictured with Fenders, never knew he was so closely associated with Gibson. It's so rare to see someone speak in such glowing terms about Gibson basses! I especially like his comments on the EB-2, and its "warm sound."

The Outpost Cafe / Re: Favorite Theme songs

I never watched "Sanford & Son" as a kid, but my band played the theme (also known as "The Streetbeater") around 1990 when I was in college. Lately I've been watching the reruns, and the bass playing by Chuck Rainey is great! In an interview here he says the wrong note at the very end was an accident, but Quincy Jones wanted to keep it in.

The thing that bugs me about reruns these days though is that they play commercials for other shows during the closing credits.
