NEW PICKUP?
« on: November 16, 2010, 04:29:29 PM »
Need some help please, I've been wanting a p bass for awhile but just can't find 1 the gets me. So was wondering can I use my non reverse tbird? Its a epie, with the p/j pick ups, can I just buy a new p pick up, thinking 1/4 pounder, n wire it up like a p bass? doing away with the jazz pick up wiring and just leave the pick up in place? Would this give me a p bass sound? And if so, how would I do it? Or am I just wasting my time? Would I be better off buying a p bass? Thanks

It wouldn't be hard to put some good Seymour Duncans in place of the Epi pickups you have now.  Replace both of them and use the same wiring set up.  It should be a big improvement in its sound and output.

Your NR Epi Bird with just a P pickup should get you close. But for traditional Precision tone, a vintage style P pickup is what you need, not a quarter pounder.

+1 The Quarter Pounder is much more forward and upper-midrangey than a vintage style Precision pickup.

I agree with the quarter pounder comments, a vintage style, which I think SD might also have, would be closer to a traditional p bass tone.  Check out their charts on their web site.  Also, I would assume a Fender p bass pickup would get you where you want to be.

After using a Bartolini 8S in a few projects, I put a Lollar P in my fanfret.  Easily the best pickup of that type for me.

I'd personally avoid the Quarter pounder if you're looking for a true P-Bass sound - those are a different animal altogether. A P-Bass is supposed to sound warm and growly with lots of bottom and mid, those 1/2 pounders are just way over the top. I had one in a MIM P and while I liked it, it really transformed the instrument into something other than a trad P-Bass. IMHO/YMMV.

Duncan Antiquity II is damn close to vintage 60s Pbass sound and reasonably priced IMHO.

You want vintage P bass tone?  Lollar or Fralin for the win.

Wow thanks guys for all the input and advise. Wish I would have been able to get on the internet sooner. Comcast wasn't working! I ended up with the spb3 p bass pickup. It does give me a much better sound then the old stock one but ya still not quite what I was hoping for. A little tweaking on my amp though and its close. I'm gonna try it for a week or so if I find I don't like it I'll sell em and try something else like you all are saying. Does anyone know where I can find sound clips? Thanks again, You all are always such a great help!!!!

+1  Really hot output.  Flat wounds will tame it some....

I've got a few videos of me with the fanfret online.  Check YouTube for the Ohio FDP jams.

Try this link from our MySpace page.

I also posted a thread about my sound earlier in the year up here.

Well, it looks like the MySpace stuff has disappeared.  I really hate MySpace now that they've changed it all around.

Try this link.  It's the fanfret, with RB-40 Rotos, running through my Eden head.

In my pee clone, I put a Tonerider pickup, nice vintagey tone, well constructed (vintage cloth etc) and ultra cheap.
Here is their bass pups http://www.tonerider.com/pickups/basspickups.html

Bought it from Dangleberry music but there are alot of dealers. http://www.tonerider.com/dealers/dealers.html

Music was better when ugly people were allowed to make it.
