Title: 50th. Anniversary CAR Jazz
Post by: drbassman on February 28, 2012, 02:22:39 PM
Saw one of these at the shop today.  What a beauty!!!  Really nice finish and blocks on the neck.  If I were to buy a jazz, this would be the one!

Gee, if my family would just give me grief one more time about my J being purple (it's Midnight Blue), I'd have a reason to sell it and get the one that's closer to Crimson color!

Hmmmm.  Could be a plan there.

It's not your fault that Midnight Blue turned purple as it aged. You can't be blamed for selling it and buying one in a different color. Really.

Building, or rather assembling, your own replica would be very easy Bill.  Allparts sells a dead on CAR body and all the other components.  Duncan or Lollar for the pickups.

This is the "Duck Dunn" tribute I built assembled in '08 before I got crazy and decided to build bodies.  "Stratosphere" (Ebay) MIJ Fender body, the rest Allparts with Duncan Antiquity II pup.
(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/Chrome%20Soapbar/CHROMED/Charlie/DunnHood.jpg).  A first order of $200 from Allparts gets you dealer prices

As long as you don't have instant remorse afterward!!!!!  I don't know why I'm having this rent Fender fixation, but it's kind of like I don't have any right now and I'm wanting just one good USA model to fiddle around with.  I'm stopping by the HOG today to look it over.  We'll see!

I am lucky I still have my "first bass" it is a Klira 356 violin bass. Similar to Hofner they were made right down the road. My first bass is the one on the left that I foolishly "improved" with Gibson SB450 pickups  I was young what can I say? I am so very glad I still have this bass. Interesting look with the blocks on the neck but no binding. When I was in Japan they had a reissue with binding on the neck and dots - I think it was based on a transitional '64 - I was wondering if your '63 had binding?

Me too.  If the factory hadn't installed the covers, I may not have done so myself.  Although, when I was young, I recall leaving the bottom cover on, but I'm pretty sure I took the top one off for easier pick playing.  Yeah, no fingers back then!!!

I'm pretty sure my 63 did not have binding.  None the less, it was a real beauty. Hardly had a dent in it when I sold in 1975.

Well, I got a surprise today.     :-[   I was going to restring the jazz bass and I noticed something funny looking around the bottom edges of all 4 string ferrules.  After a closer look, I realized the nitro finish was bunching up and starting to lift off.  It's almost like they installed the ferrules before the nitro was fully cured.  So, I talked to my guy at the shop and he's gonna call Fender.  I want the bass and they don't have another since it was from 2009.  I do know I can return it for a full refund, the shop is really good about that.   I'm going for a warranty repair as the entire headstock probably needs to be refinished and new decal installed.

Oh well!  This is probably the first time I haven't just swapped it for something else, but I really DO WANT this particular bass.  So, we'll see how good Fender's customer service is on this one!

That's too bad. Is this a new (NOS) bass from 2009? It should be covered. If it's used, I'll be surprised if Fender does anything since their instrument warranty isn't transferable.

Let's face it, Fender is not a big nitro user and maybe this shows that!  Either way, I'm going to get it fixed and keep it if possible.  If they hassle me, I might just return it.

If it weren't so sad, I'd laugh.  Fender called the shop where I bought the CAR j bass and said they really didn't have the facilities to repair the finish on the headstock!!!  Can you believe this?  They turn a couple thousand of these things, but they can fix one?  Or do a new neck and swap it out?  The a-hole Fender rep even offered me $300 to keep the bass and go away.  I told the shop to tell him to stuff it where the sun don't shine and fix the damn bass.  Now that they've tipped their hand, I'm not giving in!!!   >:(  I don't want my money back, or a discount for a screwed up finish.  I want the warrany adhered to, period.  Should be a long interesting road we're headed down.

Well, since you have plenty of other basses to play, you're ready to be stubborn and let them take as long as it requires, aren't you?

Good for you!

They may be in the business of production, not repairs, but they need to take care of their products.

Fender is learning a lesson: NOBODY can sweat the details harder than a pissed-off academic.  Details are what they live by.

I was under the impression that any repairs under Fender's warranty were done by authorized dealers, not the factory. So it doesn't surprise me that they won't fix it at the factory. But if they don't have an authorized dealer who can do the work, then the warranty isn't worth much.
Title: Re: 50th. Anniversary CAR Jazz
Post by: dadagoboi on March 22, 2012, 03:40:40 AM
An offer of $300 doesn't seem unreasonable to fix something that will require a maximum 2 hours labor and $5 material .  Especially if Fender supplies the correct decal, which they have done in the past.

I'd prefer to choose who does the repair than to trust the people who screwed up to do it correctly.
Title: Re: 50th. Anniversary CAR Jazz
Post by: drbassman on March 22, 2012, 05:50:31 AM
Good points everyone, especially Carlo's comments.  I reread the warranty and I don't see why it can't be fixed locally instead of screwing around with the factory in CA.  I'm going to suggest exactly that.  Have it down locally and send the shop a new decal.  Duh!!!!

Hell, I could do it myself, but why should I?
Title: Re: 50th. Anniversary CAR Jazz
Post by: Dave W on March 22, 2012, 06:55:04 AM
You shouldn't be expected to under any circumstances. OTOH if they gave you the finishing materials and decal along with the $300 and agreed to consider it the same as an authorized repair, you might want to go for it.

That doesn't change my dim view of the way they responded.

Now for the unbeleivable conclusion to the J bass saga.  The Fender repair shop in AZ has a new, unused CAR body (getting the body too cuz there was a chip in the bottom out of the box as well) and neck (with blocks) on the shelf and they are sending to the local shop for a swap out!!!!!  No charge!  I have to say, Fender's rep and shop really came through for us and Kurt at House of Guitars is the best salesguy around.  Parts should be here is less than a week.

Well, this is interesting because, in truth, it is all oriental factory parts.  The only unoriginal aspect is they didn't leave the factory together.  Would it make any difference to a buyer?  I don't know.  I'd hate to try and explain it as it is a bit farfetched and might be hard for some people to even believe.  You know how we are so skeptical of some of the claims we read in eBay auctions!  Someone might think it's just a random parts bass I assembled and was trying to cover that up.  Oh well, if I keep it till I'm gone, no one will probably know or care.  It doesn't feel like a flipper to me.
Title: Re: 50th. Anniversary CAR Jazz
Post by: Dave W on April 03, 2012, 05:48:22 PM
Most buyers wouldn't care, and in your case, it's a warranty replacement anyway. You're getting a factory-new neck, and you're getting it right after purchase.

The problem I have is when a seller advertises a piece as 100% original when it's really just period-correct with random parts from the same period. Makes no difference in the instrument, does make a difference in the price.
Title: Re: 50th. Anniversary CAR Jazz
Post by: Pilgrim on April 03, 2012, 08:35:24 PM
If you bought a car and the factory replaced the engine under warranty when it had 10 miles on it, would you consider it anything but new?  You wouldn't sell it as a car with a replacement engine - it would be fully warranted and equipped with correct factory parts.

IMO there is mo meaningful difference between Fender assembling the bass in the factory and a Fender dealer assembling the bass in their shop.  It's all parts that bolt together.
Title: Re: 50th. Anniversary CAR Jazz
Post by: Denis on April 04, 2012, 04:27:32 AM
I can see both points of view, honestly.
I think the difference between 100% original assembled in the factory and 100% original parts comes into play when the object (guitar, bass, motorcycle, etc) is more of a hand-made item.

For instance, lots of guys need original fenders for their Indian Chiefs because the originals are missing. That's fine, they are out there. The problem is that they will get ORIGINAL fenders, prep and paint them and then they won't fit on the ORIGINAL motorcycle. That's because the fenders were handfitted at the Indian factory and the holes hand drilled in the fenders to match the fittings on the frame, which may be in slightly different locations on each bike.

On an assembly line motorcycle (or anything else) the parts are totally interchangeable and it seems less important whether it was built at the factory or at a factory dealer.

Yeah, I see the points you both make.  I'm not going to worry about it since I plan on keeping and playing it.  I got lots of more important stuff to worry about!!!

It would be cool if they let you keep all of the parts!

LOL, good one!  Actually, the old body and neck will go back to Fender as proof of the flaws.

Maybe they could give you some kind of certificate acknowledging that the work was done? Doesn't seem too far-fetched, given how far-fetched the situation is!

Not a bad idea.  Maybe I could get a letter from them.  Frankly, I don't see it as an issue since it's all original Fender parts done under Fender warranty by a factory authorized tech.  I mean really, it isn't like I personally parted the thing together.  It's a lot different IMHO with something like an amp where circuits have been replaced or the electronics on a bass were bad and had to be redone.  It's two hunks of wood that are primarily there to hang the hardware on.  I think we're making way too much out of this.

Of ANY mfg out there Fender used parts spanning . . . well any old drawer that was discovered to have stuff in it they could use.
I think it's a non-issue.
Title: Tokyo Rose
Post by: uwe on April 05, 2012, 03:15:15 AM

A Freudian slip of gargantuan proportions if I have ever seen one! The good doctor has just revealed to us how it is really a Fender MIJ.

Is Pocket Fox like the top rock group in Hawaii?   ;D  Your Tokyo Rose segment got me interested and I Googled her for some background.  Looks like they could never conclusively pin it on her after the war.  Interesting history.

You guys are no help at all!  I just had to dump a small fortune into a lawn mower for the 2 acres I mow since my old tractor bit the dust over the weekend.  My partner in bass buying has put the brakes on my fun for a bit.  Can't blame her, I got a really nice John Deere!   ;D
