The Outpost Cafe / Liquid Tension LIVE~ Tony Levin & Co.
« on: March 14, 2008, 04:46:37 AM »
LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT
Mike Portnoy - John Petrucci - Jordan Rudess - Tony Levin
10th ANNIVERSARY REUNION TOUR

In 1998 and 1999, Liquid Tension Experiment released two instrumental albums that set the prog world on fire. The project featured Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy & John Petrucci on drums & guitar (respectively), virtuoso keyboardist Jordan Rudess and bass legend Tony Levin.

After the success of the two albums and the project's undeniable chemistry, Rudess was asked to join Dream Theater full-time and the project was put on the shelf for an indefinite hiatis....
until now!

Back together for a select number of US dates, the quartet is reuniting to revisit the magical music they created 10 years ago and tap back into their chemistry for a whole new musical experiment!

The Outpost Cafe / The Turning Point
« on: March 13, 2008, 05:42:05 AM »
WooHoo! Just found full songs to listen to from this Classic John Mayall album:

California & Room To Move~ http://www.last.fm/music/John+Mayall/_/California

John Mayall's position in the British Blues world of the 1960's was akin to Art Blakey's position in the North American jazz scene. Both were gifted discoverers and developers of talent in addition to being notable musicians. At various times, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, John McVie, and Jack Bruce were members of Mayall's ever changing band. In 1968, about the time when the talented blues guitarist Mick Taylor left to play for the Rolling Stones, Mayall radically reconceived his usual electric guitar led format. His live album The Turning Point was the refined result of this risk taking.

Mayall eliminated the drummer in his new mix. Perhaps this was partially inspired by the presence of the talented bassist Steve Thompson, a deeply jazz influenced musician who provided a surprisingly flexible foundation for this innovative band. Both Mayall and acoustic guitarist Jon Mark ably switched off in the rhythm guitar role, helping to highlight the intricacy of exchange among the band's musicians. With an acoustic guitar and, at times, a flute in the mix this drummerless arrangement was ideal.

Jon Mark's excellence on guitar was in many ways the hub of the band, bridging the strong voices of the band's bassist and saxophonist. Whether soloing or working as an accompanist, Mark was consistently imaginative, at times displaying impressive classical technique. Johnny Almonds' bluesy, jazz saxophone generated much of the fire. His long solos, for example on “Thoughts About Roxanne,” drove the band from above, providing a foil for Mayall?s vocals while Steve Thompson's bass guided the band from below.

This was a passionate band that listened and played intensely. Whatever his occasional shortcomings as a vocalist, when Mayall was on he was a distinctive and heartfelt singer, and that night in 1969 at the Fillmore East he was in good form. In addition, his famous harmonica work on “Room To Move” is still fresh and a pleasure to hear. The Turning Point manages somehow to be both laid back and exciting with a unique and sophisticated mix of musicians who play together like a great band is supposed to. In short, this is a blues-rock “classic” that deserves the tag.

Mayall's song about Hendrix was good too---Accidental Suicide from Back To The Roots.

Saw him in Santa Cruz mid-80s with McVie on bass!

The Outpost Cafe / BUDDY MILES R I P
« on: March 01, 2008, 05:34:17 AM »
Sad news. Buddy & Billy were touring last I heard with various axmen playin' Hendrix songs. Now Billy is the last survivor of the Band of Gypsys.

I got into Electric Flag a little late...after seeing The Buddy Miles Express headline at the Forum in L.A., I bought Long Time Comin'. Might have to look for that on cd--Mike Bloomfield in his prime & Buddy singin' a song or 3...."Overlovin' You" comes to mind.
The highlight of Buddy's Forum show was of course Them Changes....but it was too soon after Jimi's death & it was PAINFUL to not see Jimi playin' guitar. Still...Buddy looked coool--a HUGE man with a HUGE afro!

Unfortunately his HUGEness led to congestive heart failure. He was only 60.

Buddy was featured on Electric Ladyland some but it's mostly Mitch on drums. Billy got a photo or 2 among the little ones inside the double album cover.
Buddy's also featured on some of the tracks on Cry of Love--he shines on Ezy Ryder--& many jam session bits an' pieces that have been released over the years.
Jimi & Buddy were good friends....I guess they're jammin' somewhere again now!!
Master of the Fatback.

The Outpost Cafe / Some Cool Art
« on: February 24, 2008, 07:09:47 AM »
I met John Pitre in Y2k. I'd been a fan of his art for a long time. I told him that I'd copied some of his paintings & would love to be his apprentice & he gave me his blessings & invited me to go out to dinner sometime but he was always too busy I guess. I lived right down the street from him for awhile in Honolulu. Anyway, it's the thought that counts. He seems like a great guy.

I'll post some of my copies of his work soon....& some of my original art too.

The Outpost Cafe / Boycott eBay?
« on: February 11, 2008, 10:56:32 PM »
Just heard about this boycott of ebay. Not sure if I'm in or not.
Maybe some of you guys can help me figure out what to do.

The following was posted on one of my other fav sites:

http://forums.ebay.com/db2/thread.jspa?threadID=1000636290&start=0

The eBay boycott is set for next week, February 18-25.  Organizers are
asking people not to buy, sell or list on eBay for that week long
period.  Here are some of the reasons people are doing this:

*Final value fees are going up by 66%
*Listing fees up 20%-50%
*Sellers cannot leave negative feedback for dishonest buyers
*Reserve price is increasing by 100%, up from $1.00 to $2.00
*PayPal reserving the right to hold onto seller's money for up to 21
days w/o interest
*eBay customer service has always been poor, and now stands to get
worst

But the main reason I will be supporting the boycott is their
attitude.  They are trying to pass all this off as a decrease in
fees.  They are trying to make people believe that they are making
eBay a better place for buyers.  But the truth is that they are
implementing these changes to make tons more money.  They obviously
think we are stupid.  The new CEO of eBay said he was not worried
about the boycott, and that all the people complaining about it were
just "noise".
This is truly a grassroots effort, organized to show big business
monopolies that we are not just sheep who will stand idly by and
accept whatever is fed to us.  I for one am tired of companies like
Comcast, Microsoft, PayPal and eBay doing what ever they want because
they feel they are the only game in town.  Hopefully, this boycott
will be successful so the next time any large monopoly decides to try
such tactics, they will be reminded of the eBay boycott of 2008.

also, keep in mind that you also have the opportunity to profit from
eBay's success.  eBay is listed on NASDAQ and currently is sitting at
$28.17 per share.  Rather than complaining about fees or trying to
hurt the company, why not partner with them and profit from their
success.  That's one of the great aspects of capitalism, you can share
in the greed.  eBay's on a downward trend right now, and has been
since October.  If the new CEO turns the company around and gets eBay
back up into the 40's, you could stand to turn a nice profit.

Hmmmm....This is the first I've heard about it. I didn't get anything from ebay about them raising or decreasing prices. Have you?

The Bass Zone / Bass Backbone
« on: February 07, 2008, 01:18:06 AM »
What songs have bass as the backbone, the core of the music?
One I'm really LOVIN' these days is Humble Pie~ Stone Cold Fever!
Ironically, there's not much to it lyrically besides:
"I've got trouble in my backbone"
There's nothin' wrong with the backbone of the song tho'!
The bass is EXCELLENT! Great work by Greg Ridley.
He seems to dictate the structure of the music.
Frampton plays a great jazzy solo too!

The Bass Zone / Bassplayer Singers
« on: February 06, 2008, 04:48:18 PM »
The greatest Bassist/Singer/Songwriter imho is Jack Bruce. He plays a mean harmonica tooo

....& cello, which was his first instrument as a schoolboy.

The riff from Sunshine of Your Love was the first thing I played on my first bass, as it was for millions of others. Some of Jack's lyrics were pretty tripped out...but that's the 60's for ya.

C R E A M
was the first SUPERGROUP & Jack had 2 of the best in the biz to bounce his ideas off of...
...a real POWER TRIO who were STRONG  like a triangle.

When I met Jack 30 years later, in '98. I told him CREAM was my first concert in L.A. in '68 & he said "That was a good show!" He told me they were in negotiations to get back together & was excited about a reunion. Altho' he was tryin' to be UP, gettin' ready to go onstage with Ringo Starr & the All Stars, I could sense a cloud over him. Just found out his son Jonas died in '98 from respiratory illness...so sad. Sad too that Jack almost didn't survive past 2002. He had to get a liver transplant & luckily it was successful. The reunion was the major event of 2005 & people paid huge amounts for tickets!!! I'm So Glad it finally happened & we've got a great DVD now!

Other notable Singer/Songwriter/Bassist gentlemen are Sir Paul McCartney, Sting,

....Phil Kennemore, Phil Lynott, Glenn Hughes, Geddy Lee, Lemmy, Peter Steele, Marco Mendoza, and....

...drum roll....

...& some hot bass licks.....

Felix Pappalardi

He produced Cream & played various instruments on their albums & co-wrote some o' their songs & was the leader of MOUNTAIN

Great bio here:
www.rockforever.com/singers/west/guitarplayer1.html

MOUNTAIN
WAS AN AWESOME BAND, & FELIX WAS WORKIN' WITH SOME O' THE BEST IN THE BIZ TOO.
Unfortunately, it's not a happy ending like with CREAM. In '83 Felix was shot & killed by his wife, Gail Collins, who also co-wrote songs with him & Jack Bruce. She only did 4 years in prison, because the jury believed her story that it was an accident. The truth appears to be that she had found out about an affair ol' Felix was having with a young blond...
Alas...no MOUNTAIN dvd that I know of...We can only hope that something will be brought out from the archives.

Jack Bruce plays a Gibson violin-shaped bass now...

Felix was THE MAN! I've now got a bass like his--a 1953 Gibson EB!
The year I was born & the year Gibson electric basses were born!!
This f***er is the Stradivarius of basses! She'll be fully lefty SOON...I SWEAR!

I'm buying everything by FP....recently got Nantucket Sleighride, &  a LIVE Mountain bootleg with horrible sound quality.
I just found out about another studio album by Mountain I gotta get.
