Guitars Etc. / Coral Sitars & Sitars in General

Rory Gallagher playing solos on a Coral sitar!!

Steve Vai plays a Coral sitar on a WS song:

It's not on the '87 album that's pictured tho, it's on the next one--Slip o' the Tongue. :)~

I've got a Radha Krishna Sharma sitar which is very beautiful & sounds magnificent. The Real Deal!
I've taken only 5 classes but my teacher's so good I already sound sort of like I know what I'm doing!  :P
I'm composing my first original piece on sitar already! It's called Sunset.
It has elements of the Moody Blues song by the same name, which was a spontaneous occurence that works out PERFECTLY for my instrumental.

Been working up an instrumental version of Norwegian Wood too since I just learned that Duane Allman played sitar on that & that song done instrumentally would open shows he & Gregg did with the Hourglass in Cali in '67!
I've heard that David Crosby told George about sitars but another story is that George discovered one on the set of Help! or Hard Day's Night.
Anyway...
George made a trippy album called Wonderwall which was a movie soundtrack (the movie SUCKED pretty bad)
While still with the Beatles he recorded Wonderwall & the sessions also produced his song Inner Light:

Lyrics are basically from the Tao Te Ching. This was George's first song on a single. It was the B side of Lady Madonna.

Within You, Without You is gorgeous too:

I told my sitar teacher I gotta learn to play that before I die!

Raga Rock is a 60s thing. I aim to bring it back in style!

The Outpost Cafe / Hittin' The Note
« on: November 23, 2010, 03:11:45 PM »
The Allman Bros. Band call it Hittin' The Note when a spiritual vibe takes over & they go into a sort of OVERIDE OVERDRIVE!
Hey~ I just made up O.O. :D

Some guys have used the term Hittin' The Note for the title of their mag.
When Butch Trucks was being interviewed by that mag he described it this way:

"Hittin' The Note is reaching that point where you can't do no wrong. (ooops--That's a Double Negative, Butch ol' buddy) With us, when we're playing music, it's where the brain goes away & the body just does what it's supposed to do, & there's no thot & there's no question, & no matter what you do, it's right. It's getting to that spiritual level where the communication is total, but it's not mental."

Dave Meniketti of Y&T calls it The Zone!
This makes me wanna dig up what Dave has said about being in The Zone.

Any of you guys Hit The Note or go in The Zone by yourselves or with your band?

Once upon a time my bud Steve was playin' thru a Marshall, a Fender Champ & his Line 6 with the Line 6 on echo & God knows what else & he was WAILING AWAY on a Les Paul guitar & I was trying to keep up with him on bass which I COULD NOT DO but at times we MESHED & it was GLORIOUS & TOTALLY SPONTANEOUS!! MAGIC!!

Now if you could somehow chart your way into that territory....

The Outpost Cafe / Song & Music Ideas
« on: November 20, 2010, 02:52:43 PM »
I've written a lot of songs which may not be worth recording but they'll still go into a book of lyrics & poetry someday.
Any other songwriters here? Maybe you've just been thinking about making a song & have only a title or a few good words or a piece of a piece of music that you'd like to share or maybe you have dozens like me!!!!
Put 'em here & get some feedback! Let's not be TOO brutal with our comments, ok?
Don't wanna scare anyone away!
Let's keep our criticism constructive if possible. :D
This is my latest song, which probly WILL get recorded!  8)

ROAD RAGE

(Real HEAVY Heavy Metal---DUNH DUHN da da DUHN * DUHN DUHN)

ROAD RAGE
makes ya do crazy things
when traffic makes you feel like a BEAST in a CAGE
& some WASP-like driver STINGS
Sometimes I wish I had a gun
but then I'd probly KILL someone

If I had a gun I would use it
I'd shoot out the tires of the BIG SHOTS with BIG TRUCKS
It's goood to be left handed. Ha!
They cut you off & try to run you off the road
They're some kind of EVIL F***S!

(MUSIC gets m-e-l-l-o-w, with sitar & tablas)

I'm learning to be kind & sweet & gentle
Yes, I'm becoming a real GENTLEman
a real pleasant fellow
My guru sings so nice & mellow
I'm following in his footsteps
controlling my ANGER, lust & greed by meditation
& the path of devotion

(POWER CHORD)
(music stays mellow but builds in inTENSITY)
But on my way home from sitar class
I got HONKED AT by some stupid ass
He flipped me off as he drove past
& yelled obscenities

(More POWER CHORDS & back to FULL-on METAL!)

So I threw a big handful of pennies
at his brand spankin' new Mercedes
Then I took an exit he couldn't make

(Brief return to mellowness)

Hey~ I overeacted
I guess it was a mistake
Maybe he learned a good lesson tho
I don't know haha

(METAL AGAIN)

ROAD RAGE
makes ya do crazy things
when traffic makes you feel like a beast in a cage
& some wasp-like driver stings
Sometimes I wish I had a gun
but then I'd probly kill someone

Kinda FUN!
Not a true story btw  ;D

The Outpost Cafe / Happy Halloween!
« on: October 30, 2010, 03:15:44 PM »
There's a theater in Costa Mesa that's playing my fav movie The Crow this weekend!
I'm going tonight cuz in the movie Devil's Night is Halloween Eve.

There will be a pirate at the usual Sunday Drum Circle. YARRRRrrr
Main St. here in Surf City was ROCKIN' with lots of real coool costumes & there was a great party at a hotel called The Strand so I'll probly go there again this year.

There were just a few costumes on Main St. late last night but some of them were GREAT!
One chick was dressed as a hot fudge sundae with a cherry red hat. haha
My bud Mike & I were out there after midnight, him on guitar & me on a handrum.
Whenever hot chicks would come by we'd go into a good fast rhythm that would get 'em dancing.
Damn there were some hotties in fun costumes--including a VERY sexy Little Red Riding Hood who we serenaded with what we could remember of that old song:
"Little Red Riding Hood
you sure are looking good
You're everything that a Big Bad Wolf could want
ARRRRRrrrrrrroooooooooooooooooooooooool"
The best costume was the sexiest--a deeply tanned BABE wore a mini bikini with a mini toolbelt & danced with her bare ass right in my face!
God bless her!
We're going back tonight about 10pm....
We figure it may be just as good out there tonight as it will be tomorrow...or maybe even better!
Tonight I'll wear my top hat & goth overcoat & tomorrow I'll dress in full pirate regalia.

Have FUN everyone! I sure will!!!
Gonna get some of those orange an' black m&ms....
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

The Outpost Cafe / Homeless Movie Lovers Rejoice!
« on: October 23, 2010, 04:12:49 PM »
I've been living outa my van for a year with 3 tvs & tons of other stuff in storage.
So I need to catch up on movies altho I've seen a lot in theaters.
I've never had a big screen tv. The biggest one I've got is a 32" Sony Trinitron.
I've never had a laptop either so I'm thinking about getting a Macbook Pro with 17" screen.
They average about 9 hun used & I found one that is super loaded for that price!
The beauty of these is you can not only watch movies in a van or ANYWHERE
but you can use 'em onstage for those backing tracks & so forth.
Last night a friend asked me, "Why doncha just get a little portable dvd player at Walmart?"
So today I checked 'em out & tho they start at about $60 the best Sony ones  are 2 hun + & they're only 9" or 10" screens.
Then I checked out the Big Screen TVS & Lo & BEHOLD they've got portable 42" screens for about 9 hun now!
The same price as a used Macbook but of course without Pro Tools capabilities...
...until you connect your Macbook into it! which gives you not only backing tracks onstage, but LIGHTSHOW capabilities!!
Eventually I will have BOTH & ROCK stages with 'em!!
That justifies buying the 42 inch MEGA TV, doncha think?
For now I just wanna watch movies & I can do that IN ROYAL STYLE in my van with this wi-fi sucker by just buying a $70 broadband gizmo & paying $40 a mo. for a Virgin connection.
Then I can watch movies & stuff 24/7 on a 42" screen!

Might help me seduce ladies into my Shaggin' Wagon tooo
Neee-ya ha haaaa

The Outpost Cafe / What are you reading?
« on: September 29, 2010, 02:12:33 PM »
I've been studying up on Hendrix & the book Charles R. Cross Room Full of Mirrors is sure to make you cry when you read all the info accumulated from interviews with people who were never approached by other biographers. wow
I'm still REELING from the article someone posted here recently about the probability that Jimi was murdered by that evil shite Michael Jeffrey.
Read this book then it will all become quite clear to you!

Here's another murder mystery that was never solved...until now!
The Black Dahlia Files is a riveting account of the story made clear with new evidence:

www.amazon.com/Black-Dahlia-Files-Transfixed-Angeles/dp/0060582499

Great read! The photos are ghastly but you won't be able to put this book down til the end!

The Outpost Cafe / New Robert Plant Album ~ Band of Joy
« on: September 13, 2010, 08:32:07 PM »
Some of you Zep fans will remember that Plant & Bonzo were in a group together before Zep called Band of Joy.
Well Plant's calling his new band Band of Joy now too!!
Album was released today on Decca.

Haven't got it yet but I will. What I've heard is cool.
It's very laid back & tame.

Plant seems to be aging gracefully....not too disgracefully anyway. lol

The Bass Zone / Questions, Questions, Questions
« on: September 13, 2010, 08:24:58 PM »
...flowing into the mind of the concerned bassplayer today. :D

How do you line up gigs? Is there a minimum amount you'll accept for a gig?
Do you put a tip jar onstage or pass the hat? What's the most you've made just doing that?

Have any of you fuggers done tours all around the USA? All 50 states? How 'bout Alaska & Hawaii?
Anyone done a World Tour?

Do you have roadies? a sound man? lighting guy? a driver? other crew members?

What's in your gig bag? What all do you take on tour?
Do ya have a tourbus or what? Tourbus pulling a trailer perhaps?

I'm planning to get a tour together for Summer 2011....
