Why? Probably because that's what a previous owner wanted. I bet it sounds great. For years, my 4003S had just an EMG 35DC in the treble position and no neck pickup. Real StingRay vibe.

It's in Japan, but appears to be a 4001V63 (squared heel, no position marker on the 19th fret). Can't read the jackplate date stamp, but to me it looks like it may have been made around 2000 when the "clownglo" Fireglo was near its peak. The tuners have been changed as well as the pickups, pickguard, and probably much of the wiring harness.

Don't forget about the Allparts bridge/tailpiece on the bass.

I agree that it is/was a 4001V63; the headstock shape, also, fits the profile.

It seems odd to buy a period reproduction 4001V63 (I'm guessing it wasn't a 1999RM/4001S) and then replace all the electronics. Surely the charm comes from the toaster and the horseshoe pickups? Otherwise, just buy a 4003 and mess that up!

This could be returned to factory specs, or converted to a 4000 or something fun like that. The sunburst looks like a child's first stab at a watercolour painting. The transition between colours on the bass side is brutal.

If it were mine, and it isn't, I would consider it a candidate for building a Chris Squire sig on the cheap(er), and get it refinished in aged white.

There's also the lack of binding and dot inlays. S models weren't available for quite a long time, so vintage reissues were the only option.
