The Boys Are Back In Town or soon to be
« on: May 27, 2009, 10:46:59 AM »
Thin Lizzy is touring again

The boys are back in town! Classic 70s rockers reformed and back on the road. The current line-up is John Sykes (guitar/vocals), Scott Gorham (guitar), Francesco DiCosmo (bass) and Tommy Aldridge (drums).

From all I've heard a mediocre tribute act living in the past. Aldridge is reputed to hammer the songs to death, lacking Downey's swing, Sykes never got over the fact that he joined Lizzy when they were already in their death throes (I saw their final concert with Lynott, not a pretty sight let me tell you) and is really wasting his talent aping Lynott's vocals when he should be recording another 1987 or a Blue Murder follow-up. Gorham obviously has bills to pay as a non-writer with Lizzy, I like the guy, but doesn't he realize that he is obviously being misused here to give the last remnants of credibility to what is a floundering ship? Can't say anything about the bass player except that he has the most unenviable job of all.

I wouldn't be as damning if they had the guts to record an album with new material. Perhaps wisely they don't. Then we would know if Herr Sykes has Lynott's storytelling talents.

This is kind of like Ringo Starr and Klaus Voormann getting together and calling themselves The Beatles.

it's always amazes me when bands reform without the original frontman or lead vocalist and expect something good will come of it. the only example of a frontman change that worked out is ac/dc; that i can think of anyway. :P

You can't blame everything on him.

Yep, what Uwe says.
Being a huge Thin Lizzy fan I have always regretted the fact that I never saw them with Phil Lynott live.
I saw the reunion band fronted by John Sykes twice.
They should call themselves The John Sykes Show. It's a cabaret. With lots of Sykesian overtones (that don't belong in Lizzy at all)
Aldridge was horrible indeed. Pointless bare handed drum solo included.
The second show I saw was with Michael Lee on drums. That did help some.

Gary Moore did a better job with his one-night-off-band on the day they revealed the statue of Phil in Dublin.
He had Brian Downey on drums and guest performances of Robbo, Scott Gorham, John Earl (sax) and Eric Bell.
It's a pretty cool DVD.

The best Lizzy tribute I ever saw was Thin Az Lizzy. Four guys from Ireland with a lead singing bass player who sings just like Phil.
Kinda funny because he's remarkably white and bald.

Their two guitarists played the Robertson / Gorham role very well.

The coolest aspect of this tribute band was their choice of repertoire. Apart from the obligatory stuff such as Boys Are Back In Town and Cowboy Song etc they played some very cool - not so obvious - songs such as It's Only Money and Showdown.

They've been doing this on and off for several years now with a rotating rhythm section. I don't know if I'd pay to see this. New Blue Murder would be much cooler. Funny, I'm in a huge Lizzy mode right now. A friend of mine just sent me the "Still Dangerous" and "UK Tour '75" CDs. And my Live and Dangerous DVD should be here tomorrow. I have a bug up my ass to learn the whole live album. I can sing a pretty good Phil, but could never write like that guy. What a loss.

Yeah, I can't imagine Aldridge fitting the bill right.  Funny you should mention "It's Only Money".  One of my favorite Thin Lizzy songs, and an early band of mine covered it.  So did Concrete Blond at one point.

For those of us that grew up with Bon Scott, thats debatable.

"UK Tour '75"

That is an awesome registration. The band at their peak if you ask me.
And the booklet has some very cool pics that I never saw before.

You've gotta give people credit for carrying on Rockin' the best they can.
Ask yourself--If you were in a super famous legendary band wouldn't you keep it going as long as possible?
I sure as hell would!

Thunder & Lightning is BADASS! Not a band in it's death throes if you ask me.

Scott Gorham is from my hometown, Glendale. He was a senior in high school when I was a sophomore.
Chicks went crazy for that guy even then.
Funny how we go so fast from being seniors in high school to being senior citizens, huh? lol
He plays a Strat now cuz it's half the weight of his LP.

I'm glad to see Tommy Aldridge workin' with Sykes, & Double Bass drumming into his 60s.
I was lucky to catch one of his Drum Clinics a coupla years ago & he was as engaging as a speaker as he is as a drummer, a brilliant & lovable guy.
I loved him in WHITESNAKE & I'm glad we have a great DVD of him with them.
Hey~ this is 2 vets of WHITESNAKE & they both have earned my respect!!

That said--Sykes is incredibly talented but he's a damn prima donna.
It's shameful that he didn't show up for the gig when Phil's statue was unveiled.
I'm sure he also was the reason Thin Lizzy cancelled a gig in Hollywood 2 years ago with no explanation.
A friend & I had tix to see 'em & were really disappointed.

I'll definitely try to catch 'em again tho when the ol' Boys Are Back in TinselTown!!!!

Great live act in their heyday...

I had the misfortune of meeting Mr Lynott, and all due respect to the dead, I'll say nothing more...  >:(

Never seen John Sykes since he was in Tygers, but always thought Mr Coverdale made a big mistake in losing him...

Saw them opening for Queen at MSG in 1978 (if memory serves - gotta look for the ticket stub). Note Gary Moore on guitar...

Agreed, IMO AC/DC ceased to be when Bon died.  Not that the new guy wasn't great but it was just never the same for me.
