I'd pay more for a I than a II. They sound better to me.

I've had two IIs and could never get them to sound good in a live situation.  I love the look, but the sound is weak.

It's a hell of a handsome design. I even like it in Antigua fin ...... Who's to blame, Roger Roßmeissl ?

I think that all in all, one is better off with an old Univox 335-copy or one of the new Ibby Artcores.

FWIW, neither sounds like a Coronado. Aren't they both semi-hollow anyway? For better or worse, the Coronado is a full hollowbody thinline.

Yes.

The sound of my II was so-so. The neck dive and neck profile were bigger objections.

But I saw Jack Lawrence playing his Coro I in the Greenhornes several times over the years and he always got a good sound live. None of the phase cancellation of the II.

The Artcores are indeed semi-hollow, but the Univox 335-copy / Coily series basses are full hollowbodies.  I'm sure that due to differences in the pickups they don't sound like a Coronado, but from what I've heard that may be a feature, not a bug.  I do know there are a fair number of them in active use by gigging bassists, prices have gone up a fair amount in the last few years, but they are a heckuva lot expensive than Coronados...probably because anything that's old and says Fender on it brings silly money.

And you can pick up equally good or better hollowbodies from the same era for $300+. But they don't say Fender on the headstock.

They aren't crap.  They just aren't that cool. Or they are so uncool that they barely are.  I like them.  If they were still $150 I would buy one as that is what they are worth to me.  Which is to say they are worth about as much as a 60s EB-0, so they still are the same.

Just for collector's sake, I'd pay $750 for one tops, but no more.  I  don't miss my two.

A lot of semis are overrated if you ask me. This here, the Ric 4005 (I have one), many Framus basses, the Guild ones, the EB-2, not waving the Gibson flag in this enemy forum, but the Gibson LP Signature is one big exception  and that probably came about by coincidence. Add the EB-650 to that list, but that is another era of course.
