Title: 4001 strap pin questions
Post by: Denis on March 11, 2010, 10:11:15 AM
So now that I have the 4001 all set up and sounding great, I'm wonder if there's a certain style strap you guy use. The pins on the Ric are different than those on all my other basses and actually look smaller. Will a regular strap tend to drop the bass? I sure don't want THAT to happen!  :o

I don't know how the old ones are, the newer ones have a fine thread machine screw rather than a wood screw. If yours is like this, Mike Parks sells the strap pin for Schaller strap locks with that machine screw.

Mine has a long screw with a chrome plated pin with knurled edges. Doesn't look like it's something a strap lock would attach to but I could be wrong.

That's the way they used to be, same as the mute knobs on the bridge.
FYI, I've been gigging Rics since 1977, with the stock strap buttons, never had a problem.

Newer ones indeed accept the Schaller straplocks and are interchangeble with the old ones. Same thread.

I saw that you can get that Schaller strap lock retrofit for the Rics, but since I had everything else setup with Dunlop strap locks I never bothered.  I just use one of those Levi 3.5" straps with the stock Ric machine threaded pins ('78 4001), and they work fine.  They actually hold much better than the stock strap buttons on most of the other basses I've had.

Bread clips work great for securing your strap to the button and cost nothing.

"Ilan, that is one of the most brilliant things I've ever seen in my life!" exclaimed Denis, running out the door to buy some whole wheat loaves.

I have a pair of Schaller RIC strap posts available. They're in new condition. Contact me if interested.

The threads on them fit perfectly on your RIC.
