Gibson Basses / In praise of SD
« on: May 02, 2008, 08:31:22 AM »
I've had several custom pups done at Seymour Duncan, mostly the 60's TB reproductions.  I had 2 of those covers with them for months now and I finally called MJ at the custom shop to ask what happened.  They were essentially finished and they forgot to send them back to me!  Yikes!  Since it's been months, she was very apologetic and she's getting them right out to me with a free custom 51 SCPB pup to make up for their error.

Now that's great customer service!!!

BTW, these new chromies will land in this carcass as soon as they arrive then off to rehearsal.  This bass will depart a little from contemporary TBs.  It has 2 volume controls and one 3-way switch.  Don't need no stinking tone control!  :D

Gibson Basses / Better by the pair..........2 white LPs
« on: May 01, 2008, 03:53:44 PM »
I can't believe this guy.  Selling two LPs guitars, one Triumph bass and a Recording guitar.  It's unreal!  Wonder if my wife would notice if I sold her car???  This is killing me!   :o

I saw this in the refinishing forum.  It's pretty entertaining, even if you don't read the cyrillic alphabet!

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Guild M-85 project - new pics
« on: April 22, 2008, 04:22:33 AM »
OK, here's our first subject. A 1970 Guild M-75 that is begging for restoration and a "sex-change" operation.  It will become that often sought after, and rarely caught, M-85 bass!  Ain't modern science wonderful, said the mad professor!  Advance thanks to Shadowcastaz for his help with headstock and bridge tracings/copying.  Having a thing for this style bass will push some of my other projects down the line for a little bit!

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Welcome!
« on: April 22, 2008, 04:12:02 AM »
Hey, cool!  Dave and Uwe created a place for us hackers and tinkers to hang out and gab about our proclivity toward bass restoration, improvement and, sometimes, downright mutilation!   ::)  So, let's get started, any old project, repair or mod discussion is welcomed here.

Gibson Basses / Tailpiece update
« on: April 17, 2008, 12:22:34 PM »
Hi All,
I just got off the phone with my machinist and here's where we are with the pieces.  They are in final stages of polishing before plating.  He's been working tons of overtime (60 hours/week) and has hasn't had as much free time as he had hoped.  The pieces are completely cut and drilled  (he said it took about 15 minutes per string slot to cut them cuz he had to do them by hand. Yikes!)  So, he hopes to have them all polished up by Sunday and off to the platers Monday.  He said I could call Monday to see if he got them done and sent out.  Once the plater gets them, it only takes 3-4 days to get them back and I can ship 'em out.

My apologies for the time it's taken.  We are getting a very good deal on these as he's putting an hour or more into each one of them with hand cutting, drilling and polishing.  I'm sure glad we aren't paying the same rate as his usual customers!  He also said he's really glad he didn't have to do 50 or 100 of them!  This will probably be the last run for quite some time.

Thanks again for your patience.  We are definitely in the home stretch.

Other Bass Brands / Got a Hofner Club coming in
« on: April 10, 2008, 03:46:44 PM »
I was at the shop today and the guys told me that they had Hofner Club Icons and CTs coming in so I put my name in for one.  Should be interesting to see the Clubs in the lower priced construction.  Either way, I'll walk away with one if they are at least respectable.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Vox Hollow Body
« on: April 10, 2008, 02:39:36 PM »
It will get one of those nice maple necks I got from greatdealz and I'm even thinking about using the 2 Gibson Melody Maker pup covers as well.  Maybe add a second pup to it.

Anyway, it'll probably end up about 50% Gibson when all finished.  Is that close enough for our forum here?

The Bass Zone / SIT strings
« on: April 03, 2008, 08:55:57 AM »
My favorite strings are TI jazz flats and rounds.  I sue both extensively on my basses.  When ordering some rounds recently I decided to try some SIT Silencers, light set, based on some things someone told me and after reading their web site.

At less than half the price of the TIs, I have to say I am impressed.  They are inverse wound (however they manage that!) and look like rounds but feel really close to flats.  They have that round wound ring to them, but they are a little subdued compared to a traditionally wound round string.  They are nice on the fingers and I like their level of brightness a lot, especially as one who generally prefers flats anyway!  I like 'em.  They're getting a test run on my two NRs, the original 60's rebuild and the Epi.

I'd recommend them if you're looking for smooth feeling rounds that have some life in their output but don't bark like a piano wire!

Fender Basses / 51 SCPB pup dimensions?
« on: April 01, 2008, 12:01:30 PM »
Hey guys, could one of you with a Fender 51 RI tell me how long and wide the top fiberboard cover is on your pickup?  And the same for the underlying coil?  Thanks!

OK, I love the look and hollow body.  What can you tell us about them?  Also, anyone know why the pics on the German site show 2 pups and only one on the USA site?

Curious!

Gibson Basses / New pup covers
« on: March 28, 2008, 09:56:37 AM »
OK, I've been wanting these for some time and I finally grabbed 2 covers and chrome rings for the future (same guy with the maple RD necks).  I've been thinking about using them on my Epi project.  What do ya think?

Gibson Basses / Did we ever do a "Me and my Gibson" thread?
« on: March 19, 2008, 01:29:05 PM »
Delete this if I'm off base, but I thought I'd start a "Show us your Gibson in action" thread.  I didn't remember us doing this one!

Here's one of mine.............
