The Outpost Cafe / Happy Birthday to me!
« on: November 30, 2008, 06:13:11 PM »
My wife is great. I mentioned a guitar on eBay that I wanted and she got it for me!  ;D  It should get here  within a couple days of my birthday  (Dec. 3rd).   :P  It matches one I'm doing as a short scale bass.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / What is it? SC or humbucker?
« on: November 15, 2008, 08:44:11 AM »
OK, I got one of these for my Mosrite project but I don't know if it's single coil or humbucker.  The seller doesn't respond to email and doesn't say in his ads.  Any clues for the clueless here?

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / I need a Vox pickup.

I need a white Vox, or similar, white plastic pup for my hollow body project.  A Japanese pup would be fine.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Mosrite bass body and parts sale
« on: October 30, 2008, 01:54:17 PM »
While trolling around the Mosrite forum, looking for truss rod advice, I found out about a guy in Canada who bought the left over stock from Mosrite when they went belly up.  Turns out he doesn't have many bass parts, but he has lots of NOS and unfinished guitar bodies and some necks too, I believe.

I was able to buy a NOS bass body, pickguard and a couple genuine knobs.  So, my thought is to build a 1 pickup Mosie bass and I've at least got a real neck I can copy for it.  The only tough part is the bridge and those goofey tuners, but you never know what might pop up on eBay!

I'll post pics when the stuff gets here.

« on: October 24, 2008, 05:48:55 AM »
OK, I've got 6 projects in the shop and I need some more tools, so something has to go to refill the PayPal account.  Anyone interested in my 98 LP bass?  Drop me a PM before I put her up on eBay.

The Outpost Cafe / 20 hours in 1st gear!
« on: October 21, 2008, 08:46:21 PM »
Ok, my son has a fender bender with Mom's 2000 Chrysler van (157,700 miles on it!) in Clemson, SC.   The front end is smashed in, radiator destroyed along with cooling fans, AC condenser, tranny cooler, left side running and signal lights,  and bumper, hood and fender.  Looks like a loss on the old girl. But, the Southern boys agree to try to fix her up  so we can limp home. My idea, not theirs!  We install a used cooler, radiator, and fans. We have to hard wire the fans, the original plug was crushed. I had to rewire the left running & turn signal lights.   Took a day to do it all. Also, cut away some of the left fender with a saw for better tire clearance.

Got it all together and no coolant or tranny leaks!  Paid the guys and hit the road. One issue I didn't foresee: the wiring and sensors that control the tyranny shifting was apparently crushed, so it never would shift out of 1st. gear.

So, not being one's to give in, we hit to road on Monday night and drove 5 hours, slept for 7, got back on the road and drove another 15 hours (including food and oil stops) to get home tonight at 9:15 PM.   We covered 800 miles, averaging 45 MPH all in first gear.  the old van was amazing. It never overheated and ran like it didn't even need another gear.   We were really lucky to make it.  Pictures tomorrow!

Gibson Basses / My 98 LP bass "custom"
« on: September 29, 2008, 05:12:33 PM »
It turned out even better than I imagined it would.  The Fralin pups are great and I mean great!  I did a little comparison to my 60s TB bass with the SD custom pup, and they both really sound very much alike.  Booming lows with just the neck pup and lots of mids and high growl with both or the neck pup only.  I have SIT rounds on it and they are a little softer sounding than normal rounds, but I like that it doesn't sound like a piano!

Gibson Basses / 2003 TB, lotsa chrome!!!
« on: September 29, 2008, 05:10:05 PM »
Here's my "newest"  TB.  All finished except for the rear control cover, gotta make one sometime.  It sounds fantastic.  I really can't quite tell, but it seems a little deeper in tone than my white TB with the plastic pup covers.  That one is pretty growly and full of mid-ranges.  This one growls but has a nice bottom end.  Both have TI jazz rounds on them.

Fender Basses / Need some measurements
« on: September 12, 2008, 11:30:20 AM »
Hey folks,

Can anyone give me the measurements on the "F" logo on a Fender Coronado bass tail piece?  I'm working on making one for my Coro project.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Coronado Bass - almost finished!
« on: September 05, 2008, 04:37:46 AM »
I've been wanting one of these for sometime, so I grabbed this one that will just need a little body touch up.  I won't touch this one for months and will wait for pups and neck to pop up on the bay.  If not,  I have a Musicmaster neck I can convert and will use TV Jones instead if necessary.  Heck, the TV pups are probably better sounding anyway!

Gibson Basses / NR TB measurements photo
« on: September 03, 2008, 06:15:10 AM »
OK guys, help me out!  When we were deep into our NR TB discussions (re: Bach), someone circulated a nice color photo of an NR bass with measurements drawn on it.  I saved it but only the computer knows where it's at!!! Can someone post that photo again???  Thanks!

Gibson Basses / NR quiz

Were the NR Firebird bodies the same size as the NR TB bodies, or were the basses larger?  Asking for a builder friend of mine.
