Most basses I've ever played have plenty of "sustain".  About the only time I want to note to ring on very long is when it's the last note in a number, anyway. 

Perhaps if I were playing different styles of music it would matter more...but it's really not very often that I hold one note more than 2 seconds or so...and pretty much any bass except one with a stout mute on it will do that.
