1964 4001S/RM1999 FG in the UK - $20,715 starting bid... odd looking thumb rests can be removed.

"WOULD LEAVE FOUR SMALL SCREW HOLES WHICH COULD EASILY BE FILLED TO BLEND IN WITH THE ORIGINAL FINISH."

Um... OK. Looks like a re-fin anyway.

You think? looks original to me, some fading on the front and worn around the edges. Not my favorite shade of Fireglo, but okay.

That looks original to me, never seen a refin in that version of FG.

I'm definitely not an expert, but the edges look really strange to me, and the whole thing seems really light. I know there's not, but the way it's finished, it kind of has the look of having binding around the body. Is that how they did Fireglo in the 60s?

There are many shades and applications of Fireglo, from very dark around the edges to very light orange, from nice gradual burst to clownburst like early 90's.

In this specimen the front is more faded than the back, and this is telling me that this bass spent large portions of its life on a wall hanger (or a stand) and not in a case. Refins are usually the same shade front and back.

The edges in S models are not rounded like Fenders, so when they wear with use they look like this.

As has been pointed out on Rickresource, over spray on the worn part on the back at the neck join, kind of says it all.

A Lemmy... Haven't seen one on eBay for a looooong time. Starting at $5,000, reserve price is apparently higher.

Yow! $5000 wouldn't be bad considering the rarity. I wouldn't be surprised if this goes a lot higher, even in a recession. Reserve is probably well up there.

If I were in the market, that would be the one. I regret passing on a late 80s mapleglo/BT S back in the late 90s, it was $500 at Guitar Center which was underpriced back then.

THIS is one that you want. Late 80s "S" models are killer!
Just like my son's '87 but his has the 7-bolt tailpiece so no tail lift as the one on eBay... Killer bass and hands down the best of the 3 Rics in the house.

I have so many Ric's and never had a problem with tail lift, in fact I just thought it was an urban myth, until now.
That is a very good picture you've shot there, brilliant.
