Nice Birds! So what was the "dismay" when the bass first arrived??

It didn't work!  The jack socket is very rattly and worked intermittently.  It needed a bit of a set up (done acousticaly).  I've not played it in anger yet.

OK pictures.  Everyone loves pictures.  Three birds.  A pair of Gibsons and my Hamer FBIV.

This thread is useless without photos.

Harsh, but true.  I posted hot and sweaty after a long evening rehearsal session.  Sadly yesterday was a blur of collecting, opening, shaking my head in dismay, ordering parts and then packing up for the rehearsal.

Photos this weekend, I promise.

While I'm some way off catching up with Mark, my new baby arrived today.  Picked up an old black Thunderbird.  It needs a little TLC, but it was a decent price...the barrel-jack is shot and I honestly forgot how Dickensian those three point bridges are, so there's a Hipshot Supertone winging it's way to me as well.

Woop.

I just don't get this.  $400.  A few years back I had a real desire for an all original early 60s F*nd*r J*zz, I saw a couple and they were in reality pretty awful - newer basses just sounded better.  Honestly, does a $400 bridge part really make a difference or is it all on the owners head?

Personally I'd never put a Hipshot bridge on a T Bird, yes it's well designed but the aesthetics leave me  :puke:

I know before I took delivery of my white T-Bird that I wanted to swap out the stock bridge for a Hipshot Supertone...I'm so glad I did; the original was just a bit too crap to be honest and I needed full control over action and intonation.  I mean you'd expect that on a $1,500 bass.  I have a second Thunderbird arriving in a few days and I'm wondering whether I should get one on order pending it's arrival.

I wouldn't change a thing on that.  It all looks good.

norway is ground zero for lots of bands like this. ;D

Newbie here.  Again.

This sort of music scares me.  When I was a kid, rock meant Kiss, Rush, Mott The Hoople, The Sweet, Queen.  I just find this stuff unlistenable.

I wouldn't mind it if it was in black and the slab-o-plastic pickguard was a bit reduced on size.

...oh and black hardware too.

I know I'm new here etc. but I took a look at the Epiphone and Gibson website blurbs and pulled images down of both Thunderbirds and the basses are identical barring headstock tweaks to accommodate the Epiphone (or Gibson) trussrod cover.  Don't believe me?  Take a look.  The little white dot on the lower horn, the identical reflections on the control knobs and the end of the headstock.  This is soooo lazy!

...also the NAMM shot shows <shudder>chrome hardware</shudder>.

"These are my two, but I've de-chromed the Hamer...all black now. "

There is nothing like a good deed done, my young limey. Where may I kiss you first?

Unless you are a Nikki fan, the only reason to own a Blackird is that it is - for whatever reason - leaner sounding than any other TBird I know or own. It sounds almost thin over a small rehearsal amp, but just right and very cutting over a large rig. A bass for stadiums.

PS: While also part of the three point bridge liking minority here, I do like the way the Supertone looks on your whitey. I only put a Supertone on my Blackbird so I would have at least one TBird with that replacement bridge. I like the looks, but the sustain gain is minimal (not that you would need sustain gain on a TBird anyway) and I'm fine with the adjustment possibilities of a three point. But the Supertone is a nice modern bridge all the same.

The Supertone was more necessity than demand...the bridge couldn't go any lower, but now I decent control over action and intonation.

Aah, the chrome.  We're not best buddies to be honest although there is still quite a bit of it on my other basses!

No kisses necessary!
