Well, my order is in for a vintage sunburst, through Key Music, Belgium.   ;D

Free shipping as well!  Woop.  Let's hope TNT don't deliver it in two parts.

I've checked Gibson's website each week in case these showed up. Now that I see pics, I'm tempted to switch my order from blue to burst.

I'm with you here.  I'm not really a fan of sunbursts, but with a Hipshot on there (already ordered) instead of that piece of junk Gibson call a bridge it would look very sweet.

...I just got an e-mail from Key (Belgium) saying they may not get these until March or April next year.

You know, my heart sinks.  Does anyone actually know when the NRs are actually coming out?

It does beg the question of why this is on their website when the rumours were it wasn't due until next year, when the NR Thunderbird is due imminently and there's still no mention of it.

On the subject of the bass itself, it's pretty fugly...hardly a head turner.  The sharp squareness of the headstock juxtapositioned against the curves of the body just doesn't sit right with me (I suppose this bears out why I was more a Grabber fan than a Ripper).  Of the four, the blackie looks the nicest...would be nice to see it with a black 3-ply plate.  Ho hum.  What do I know?  Does anyone from Gibson actually read this forum?

Gibson Basses / Re: Epi Thunderbird Classic-IV Pro now on their site ...

It's pretty amazing...have a look at my initial post here about the mock-ups on the Epi-site and the Secret Squirrel guy (sorry don't know his name) holding the two models.  The bridge placement certainly looks well off and the pickup locations look a tad skewed as well, so I guess the defining thing here is that it's just another interpretation of the design rather than an exact copy of real thing.  I have to say I'm a little disappointed, but then hey, at the price these are selling for, it'll work better for Nikki Sixx to smash one of these at the end of a show rather than an Affinity range Precision bass.

In closing, I'm glad I didn't jump all over this.  My money is going towards a pelham blue NR reissue, which for the ££s is only about twice the price of this.

Sorry to bring this back on track.  Key Music (Belgium) are doing the 'birds at 999Euro, or in GBP, a pant wettingly low £800.00.  Surely shome mishtake?

Over on this side of the pond, Thomann in Germany e-mailed me earlier, they expect these at the end of October.  1,149 Euro or c.£910GBP.

It would be rude not to.

Gibson Basses / Re: BaCHbirds....

I have been reading up on these (honestly!), but I guess sometimes when a thread reaches 130 pages, sometimes it is probably simpler (and maybe wrong) to request more succinct choices of mods.  I bow to your information.

The B&CHs seem ridiculously cheap this side of the pond (c.£270GBP), so with a birthday coming up, I will probably take a punt on one of the single pickup jobs in either black or cherry.  I'm really not up for another refinishing job at the moment, so will probably keep the mods to a minimum.

Thanks for your input.

Gibson Basses / BaCHbirds....
« on: September 22, 2012, 02:08:02 AM »
Quick couple of questions to any owners and anyone who has modded them.  I have a Lakland Skyline DJ5 that I'm thinking about moving on and for that swag, I could well bag three guitars (I'm thinking as I now have a pair of Gibson TBs, maybe give a punt to one of the new Epiphones, plus an Epiphone Phant-o-matic, and a Bach as a project).

OK, here goes my questions/concerns.

I guess first off, are the stock models off the shelf any good? You know, are they playable and not needing major surgery.

Side by side with a non-reverse is the BaCH a decent enough facsimile?  Accurate dimensions etc.

Second up, mods.  Looking at their website, I like the chrome hardware, but I'm really not a fan of the look of those pickups...what are you guys swapping out?  Also, where does one procure a scratchplate?

Also, I've seen this thread a couple of time :http://www.hillscloud.com/2011/06/refinishing-a-thunderbird-bass/

Thanks

Gibson Basses / Re: True tone or stock three point? Opinions anyone?
« on: September 10, 2012, 02:04:40 PM »
I'm with Neephied here.  The Supertone gives you everything a modern bridge should (and so should the Truetone).  Also the E-String bridge saddles on both three points on my pair of TBs was unpleasantly sharp/pointy.  Just keep the original bridge so you can revert to original pending any future resale.

Well, the barrel jack arrived...installed.  The Hipshot Supertone arrived today as well.  Very happy.  It sounds the nuts to be honest.  A bit phatter than my whitey.

Sweeeet.
