I'm still using Mohawk products, Bill. But I've started using TCP catalyzed automotive polyester primer under solid colors. It builds and fills great. I've also used Reranch for some color coats, I take the paint out of the rattlecan and put it in the gun. But I'm switching to buying quarts of acrylic lacquer from TCP global. Each quart will color coat at least 10 basses and they'll mix any color ever used on a car. I expect to have a lot of leftover paint. I basically have an up charge that covers the cost of the custom color which varies between $50 and $100. Reds are the most expensive, generally.
The sunburst was done on natural mahogany, so it's only one color step. I mixed a burgundy/brown dye from red, yellow, and blue ultra penetrating stain and shot it with my regular gun, only with low pressure and tight round pattern. Here's a how to from Youtube
I used a turntable with the bass flat and did one side then the other.
There can be a pretty steep learning curve. I suggest you convince Scott to give you some tips! Preparation of the body is 90% of getting a great finish with the least amount of effort.
