Saw that this morning. Cool bass. I think that's quite a good BIN price.

[about the 4005 sound]

I believe the sound has been referred to as "plink and thud" due to the pickup placement and overall design elements.  :P

here you can find a poll on RRF with samples of various Rickenbacker's. I was curious how many RRF members where able to tell which one of the sound-samples where the 4005. Answers available in the same thread.

[edit] It is ChrisP's 4005 you hear in these soundsamples btw. He was so generous to lend it to me for some time as I was highly fascinated by the 4005, but didn't even know how it sounded at the time.

Those samples were enlightening!  I've never heard a 4005 in isolation like that, and I was kinda surprised at how close it sounded to the 4001.  The difference is much more subtle than I expected.

4002 Mapleglo with some birdseye... and a story about which I have doubts. It was allegedly "originally given by Geddy Lee to his keyboard tech and is an EXACT replica of Lee's 4002 bass.  As such it has heavier frets and a non-standard bridge which were done at the time of purchase by Rickenbacker in Santa Monica."

The bridge is the kind that you sometimes find on Rics from the UK, probably by a UK maker. No way this was done at RIC (which isn't located in Santa Monica...) and certainly not Geddy's choice of bridge. The bad news are the drilling through the body and the ferrules. I guess it can be restored, but at a cost.

Still a nice rare bass. As always, no affiliation.

That one came up a while ago with the same story. I don't buy it. That's a Stars Guitars bridge, which I believe was made in California. Every Ric and Fender he owns has a Badass. Why would this have a Stars? Pretty bass though.

Yow! Strings through the body... That's an irreversible mod.

No way that story is accurate.

the "holy grail" of Rickenbacker basses

Yeah, right.   Almost nobody wanted it when it was current.

I see similarities with the 4005.

And the Flying V and Explorer in the late 50's, and let's not forget that the Les Paul was discontinued in 1961 because sales were dwindling, and was re-introduced only 7 years later. And Van Gogh has sold only one painting.

Wasn't the reverse Thunderbird discontinued back in the '60s in part because it was expensive and suffered decreasing sales?

gibson sales and marketing- fz knows why- Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.

I ment the ""holy grail" of Rickenbacker basses" which the 4005 nowadays is also i.m.h.o..

Saturday on NPR I heard FZ's band's performance of "It Ain't Necessarily So" from "Porgy and Bess" with the late newsman Daniel Schorr singing. It was spectacular!
