I got this one about fifteen years ago , after looking for one for years . They didn't come up for sale much here in Halifax . I wanted a later 4001 . And I fell in love with it . I still get a little weak in the knees when I look at it .
Bypassed the cap and strung it with TIs .
It has a gorgeous old school thump . But it's rich .  This is the reason I appreciate a nice Ric .

Wow, looks exactly like my '75, bought about 18 years ago - but this one is post 75 I guess?
I had TI's on it back then too 8) Like your 4000 too!

Can't bring myself to put flats on a Ric, I like the Ric Clank too much. Fresh rounds on the '73 and broken-in rounds on the Shadow, that's as far as I'll go. For thump I have my P's and Hofners.

That's a really nice application of FG.

I have a Stingray I keep fresh rounds on , so I do have a clanky one . I just love the sound of TI's on a Ric . Always loved the MacCartney thump better than the program clank . The 4001 is an 80 .

That is a nice 4001! I just put flats on my 4003S for a single I'm working on. Man, it's instant vintage/McCartney thump. Here's a 30 second isloated bass clip -

Not too long ago I wanted to trade my trusty FG 4001 for a 4000, for no other reason than looks!
One pickup basses grow on me - and Rick's look so much better with one pickup..

I'm with you on the single pickup variety being more visually appealing. Must be plenty others that feel the same. One would think Rickenbacker is missing the boat on some more sales by not continuing production on the 4000.
Contrary to what James Bond says, a good Gibson should be stirred, not shaken.

I'd love to see a reissue of the original , but maybe with a thinner neck than the originals . Never seen one in the flesh , but I've heard they were chunky , and heavy . I love the first pickguards !
And a 4005 , of course .

They hacked guitar bridge/tailpieces for the early 4000's. Pretty lame.

It was an endless tone quest with the Rick, at the time it was so different from what I had played before. For a long time D'Addario XL Red's was my favourite 4001 strings, recorded a lot with those. Instant bass piano! Now, it's got regular rounds, just to have a Geddy tone on tap if required🙂

1992 4003S/5 Red/BT. $3K BIN

Not a case queen but looks like it's all there. Starting to delaminate near the heel.

Late 1973 Burgundyglo in Japan. $3,819 BIN.

No checkerboard, wide crushed pearl inlays, gap tooth bridge or even a neck toaster, but still a great color from the 1/2" spacing era. And it has the Plexi TRC and wavy Grovers.
