Thought that might give you a chuckle... stumbled on this as they've tucked Gibson in the link...

I think that would be in the hollowbody category.

1981 4005 in Walnut - rare finish especially on 4005's - this one is (was?) Bert Heitling's. It's on p.46 of Paul Boyer's book.

Sensible (IMHO) $5,900 BIN price.

I hope whoever buys it DOESN'T refinish it.

This one is a recent build, by Paul Wilczynski, around relatively few Ric parts, the numbered jack plate among them. Rickenbacker allowed it, but there was some discussion whether this should be considered a real Ric. My personal take was that if RIC authorized it, then it's "real", but a new jack plate with a 2007 date code should have been used.

Those pics show the metallic nature of the fins much better than that other post...

They both really "jump" out nicely...

Re the eight-string "ho" ... I don't get the "authorised" part ... this is or is not a Ric... they are ultra "brand" conscious, so if they condone this, it must be the "real-deal" ... ?

Hey Ken- there's a thread here about that bass:  http://www.rickresource.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=400783&hilit=4005%2F8

Really beautiful!  Wish I could afford the cost of admission.

Apparently it was built by the fellow who was producing Ric acoustics under license, and this 8er was born from the ashes of a butchered 4005, parts reused, permission obtained, etc.

Handcrafted or not, authorized or not, IMHO there's no way that's a real Rickenbacker. It did not leave the factory that way. It was "scratchbuilt", as the builder himself put it.

If you had a Fender bass that was damaged in an accident and you replaced the body and neck with factory authorized parts while reusing some original hardware and electronics, nobody would call it anything but a partscaster. How is this bass any different?

Right- I don't see it as a factory Ric any more than any other "licensed-by" (or in this case, gentleman's handshake) product... but it seems to have been built by capable hands, and I can't help but speculate that it would probably be a good player (eight saddle bridge and low action in the pics).  Maybe even better than a real 4005/8, if one were available.

It's apparent that he's not going to be able to fetch a price in original-4005 territory because of this - otherwise it'd be gone by now.
