For a fraction of that price I'm sure you can have one of the Ric-knowledgeable luthiers convert a 4003 to a 4002.
And it wouldn't sound as good.

Reminds me- there was a nice thread (well, it started nice) recently over at RR about the 4002 pickups.  Gut shots, winding specs, etc...

The guy who bought the same bass twice — first in 1977 and again in 2023

"paper thin neck" sounds like a caution to me. Action looks high too. OTOH if you really want an early 4000, there it is.

The BadAss does look more at home there than the original 6-slot guitar units that came with the bass in 1960.

The action, judging by this pic... I've seen worse.

The seller bought this used and remembers it as being a 1960, but I'm pretty sure they started making the thinner bodies and longer upper horn as this one has in '61. A couple of 4000 basses from 1962 have turned up with the old-style pickguard and bridges. I don't know for sure, but it seems that the current style of pickguard and the infamous Rick cast tailpiece/bridge/mute assembly started to appear in 1962. So far, the only known 1961 two-pickup Rick bass appears to have been an experimental prototype, "lavishly" illustrated in my book.

1983 4001S in white, with a set neck and (as with all Ric set-neck 4000's) off-axis body. Starting bid is $900, no reserve.

Another DREAM bass...I aksed him if he would be interested in a trade for a 1965 Gibson Thunderbird.

If he agrees, better make sure you have a right to cancel. Super thin neck, high action, you could wind up with an expensive wall hanging.

Check out this 4001S on eBay, Dave... You can drive a bus under the strings. But this one is a set neck and the neck angle can be corrected.

Wow, that's bad. Overpriced considering the expense of a neck reset, which itself will affect the value.

Set neck and a neck pickup swimming pool rout, not an ideal combination.

1968 4001 in Italy, €6,000, here's what Google Translate returns from the original text -

Rickembacker 4001 Bass 1968 serial number : HF 1112 ( see photo) , Fireglo , Horseshoe pickup , Checkerboard binding - Important tool "vintage" , in excellent condition , the inevitable signs of wear due to normal use are made ??over the years in concerts, shows etc. . (see photo gigamti ), and in Bass has never had " broken " , it has never been replaced in " remanufactured " parts , completely original , only the two screws of the pick -up bridge and some screws on the pickguard and bridge replaced as consumed , all the mechanics , the pick-up and circling original and perfectly working (see photo details ), there are missing parts, hard case at the time ( see photo) the bass plays very well in his unmistakable "Sound Rickenbacker " , a sound that has made the "History " of music over the past 50 years by Paul McCartney of the Beatles Chris Quire of Yes to countless other musicians. Truly unique piece for collectors. Do not pass ! You will not find ever more under these conditions ( these conditions ) . If you are really interested do not hesitate to ask for more information and photos of details. Happy bidding !

ps. The bass was purchased by me in person in 1969 in the musical instrument store " Polidori " in Pesaro , in 1974 he played in the group " Balletto di Bronzo " - (known group "progressive" era ) , in addition to the first owner ( perhaps the bassist of " the Primitives ," but I'm not sure ) had no other owners . Spreader is ( subject to agreement ) having the vision and try the bass at my home, for direct contact : George 348 2217334
