Title: finishing log Scott's JAEbird
Post by: dadagoboi on March 27, 2011, 03:11:21 PM
This will be an ebony with white pickguard 'bird.  Scott has supplied a BadBird and tailpiece.  The Tonepros studs and anchors came from Allparts.

This is the first attempt with a .75 mm shim in the neck pocket and anchors flush with the top of the mahogany body.  Action was a little high.  I reversed the screws and springs on the Badbird to make it easier for me to adjust, it can be returned to stock no problem
(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/GOT%20JAEbird/P1020870.jpg)

So I pulled out the anchors and drilled the holes deeper.  Sank the studs about 2mm into the body (3/32"), cut very shallow slots in the saddles and increased the shim to 1mm thick.  Neck is a Jazz profile with bone nut and Gotoh CBS type tuners.  Since it's for Scott I'm not concerned about neck dive. ;D  JAEbird Customs now have Hipshot Ultralite Clovers, vintage look with less weight.

Here it is with preliminary intonation, I use an over the strings pup to set it.  The tailpiece has to have the mounting holes enlarged for the proper size screws.  Other than that it is a SWEET hunk of stainless.

Now disassembled for finishing.  Edge sanding, leveling, radiusing the edges, finish sanding and sealer next.

Dam!  She looks great, yeah no worries about neck dive....................in fact a bass feels just plain weird to me if it doesn't head south. Some nice grain in that maple neck. The tailpiece is stainless one of drbassman's (Bill) runs. The bridge is nickel plated brass. I am pretty stoked, ever since I saw pictures of John with his Fenderbirds (were talking '70's here) I have wanted one. Looks like it is going to arrive around our anniversary , hmmmmmmmm now what to get the wife?

No, sorry Jim.  That one's going to the UK in 2 weeks. You're #5 in the queue (#3 after that one).  I've been working on the JAEbird II and am close to finalizing it.

So Carlo, with the Mohawk paint, you don't have to grain fill the mahogany?
Title: Re: finishing log Scott's JAEbird
Post by: godofthunder on April 15, 2011, 07:57:00 PM
Bill I usually only fill grain on finishes when the grain shows. For solid colors I shoot a couple of coats of sanding sealer. Not sure what Carlo is doing.

Right, Doc, no grain filler.  Sand to 180.  2 sealer apps, sand to 400. 2 topcoat apps.  Wetsand 600, 1000, 1500.  Buff.

You're welcome, Doc. I've owned 4 booths, up to a 20' one, any way I can help let me know.

Yep, works well.  I'm exploring a proprietary bridge/tailpiece.  Unlike Gibson I have the will and resources to do that. ;D

Agree, but I think, considering the band JAE was in, I woulda made the top of the "d" into an arrow as in:

Thanks, simple logos for (my) simple mind.  I don't have a spraybooth, just 20 years of shooting paint.  The amount of overspray is minimal with the right air pressure, paint viscosity and gun settings.  You could easily get away with a 4'x8' sheet of OSB with15x15" cutouts and 2'x8' side wings using filter media with no exhaust fan.

I considered it but figured the light blocky letters on black were enough of a reference.  Seems to have worked.

I like the GOT in the neck pocket and the serial # on the neck plate both nice touches. I flipped the neck plate around because I had to drill a hole for the strap lock. Again great playing and sounding bass!  I took the bass to rehearsal on Mon. I am really pleased beyond words. The bass plays great, sounds great, feels great. Carlo really nailed it. The bass has big full meaty tone, BALLS and I mean big ones. Very comfortable to play, no neck dive and a hell of a lot shorter than a nonreverse Tbird lol. I don't know the weight but is a lot lighter than I expected. I love the Allparts J neck, beefy 70's like profile (reminds me of my '68-'69 NR) It's almost dead flat, very little relief, not a buzz anywhere. I ran it through my Sound City 200 Plus and a 1x15 cab  I just loved they way it sounded, notes just ring and ring and ring. I am so pleased I am going to order another. Rarely have I ever just strapped on a bass and felt at home. If anyone out there is thinking of ordering a bass from Carlo he certainly gets my endorsement.

You're making this hard Scott (one more month, one more month, one more month...)

Did you go with the Duncans in yours? If you're this happy with the Duncans, I can't wait to hear mine with a pair of the '66 ThunderBuckers!

Mine came with the Duncans and with the help of my pickup booster pedal the Duncans sound really good. I wanted mine to come with the Thunderbuckers but it was ready to soon. Thats ok I have already ordered two '66 Thunderbuckers and at least one will make it into my Jaebird. All I can say is it is worth the wait.
