it's a Bird, it's a plane!
« on: May 27, 2011, 06:52:21 PM »
having been on this forum since the begining (and before) two of the things that come up all the time are war planes and Thunderbirds. i never was so much into either (i like motorcycles and rippers) but i watched a show on the history channel where they recreated the Tuskeegee Airmen battling the Nazis in Italy(i think) and their Mustangs were such beautiful machines. like a shiney little hotrod. so primative, and the things they could do! Damn!, i really dug that show. and i got to spend some time with a newish Tbird recently and was shocked at how small it felt. the bodies always looked like they were HUGE, maybe only small skinny people play 'em. Ha,ha,ha. it sounded like my LPB-1 which i expected.

The topic title automatically started me singing Country Joe & The Fish's Superbird: It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a man insane ..... so maybe you're up for a session or 2 with your local shrink ?  ;D

Never heard of them, but sounds like a great story (looked it up). Interesting that they flew razor backs.

One of the most important things I've always admired about them is that they simply did not lose the bombers they were escorting.  Up until them the escorting fighters would peel off into dog fights with the Germans - these guys did not - they stayed on the bombers and did not get pulled into side battles and saved many of their bombers.  The bomber pilots had great respect for these guys.
