Title: Temptation got me!
Post by: Pilgrim on August 18, 2015, 08:55:16 AM
It's mostly a buy based on cosmetics, but I've been curious about the Dean Cabbie basses for years.

This is the best price I have seen on one, and free shipping.  Can't wait!

damn, that price makes it almost free. ;D plus free shipping. you are the winner of today's edition of NBD. i played a lot of those in stores when they first came out. i really liked them, even the 32"neck. but as usual i could not afford one. good for you.

I've been seeing them on Ebay for years at around $400...Amazon has them at $385.  I've never seen one even close to this price ($234) before.

I figure that if I like the bass and don't like the pickups (unlikely, I'm not very picky) that ThunderTrons or FilterTrons should fit nicely.  I'm also delighted that it's 32" scale.  I'm spending much less time with my 34" scale basses, which makes me feel lazy, but there it is.  Short scale is easier for me to play.

I'll be darned...a post on TB led me to this photo of a Stylist with ThunderTrons, so options seem available.

Great score and cool bass for surfin' or hillbilly rock!  They are well made, saw one a few years ago in the shop.  Let us know how you like it.  You couldn't build one yourself at that price!

Cool looking bass! Be interested to hear your thoughts on it once you get it.

i always liked the Cabby and I''m glad it's back in the Dean range. The only thing I dislke are the EMG-looking pickups. But with filtertrons... wow! Maybe even black Gretsch pickups?

It arrived Friday, double-boxed and in great shape. The weight is 7 pounds, 8 oz. which is a nice weight for a semi-hollow.  Finish and detailing is quite nice.

Bridge is a two-post fixed and easy to adjust up and down (convenient slotted screws) and there is close to 1/2" of fore and aft adjustment on each saddle. ...

And it fits into the same hard case that my Gretsch 5123 uses - VERY handy!

Intonation was right on target for every string but G, so I only had to tweak that one.  I also checked the frets and they appear to be level.  I was able to drop the strings quite a bit and the action is good.

The sound is perhaps a bit "throaty" compared to other basses, but since it comes with fresh rounds and everything else I own is either flats or years-old rounds, I'm not a great judge.  My left-hand finger technique is bad enough that I have "zing" ringing out almost every time I fret a note.  Labella Deep Talkin' flats or Chromes are probably headed for this bass pretty soon.

The Dean with the like-minded Gretsch in the background.

Looks like you'll need long scale flats for that one. Lots of acreage between bridge and tailpiece.

Exactly!  Distance from nut to the tailpiece is 35" by careful measure. Definitely requires long scale strings. I anticipated that.
