Native drum
« on: January 05, 2022, 02:41:54 PM »
We decided to buy a drum from a Mi’kmaq artist that lives about an hour away .
Alan Syliboy , he does a regular “Daily Drum” post on Facebook , and usually explains the significance of the image .
We settled on a Woman drum .
The Daily Drum
Todays drum features the image of a woman as taken from petroglyph images found in Nova Scotia.
In Mi'kmaw tradition, women are accorded the highest respect and regard, for they are the portals through which a spirit comes to earth. …
Here’s the drum , we pick it up tomorrow , good thing we’re looking at some weather Friday

Well, that's a very poetic way of describing the ability to give birth!

I like the art. It could be both, something off a cave wall or modern feminist art.

He has brought native culture to a broader audience , I know quite a few local people that follow his Daily Drum .
Alan does have some representation in France and Germany , so he’s become established .
He’s generally working on several paintings , and banging out the drums . The drums are elk , and sourced from the West Coast , something I found a little odd , but I suppose they’d be a bear , deer , moose mix if they were locally sourced . The Mi’kmaq here seem to be more fishers than they are hunters . I suspect his suppliers deliver a more consistent product .
Looking forward to meeting him tomorrow .

We made The Daily Drum today ! Here’s the pic of Alan with Herself’s new drum …

The Daily Drum
Today’s drum is entitled “Spirit Woman”.
The spirit of this Mi’kmaw woman is overlooking the physical world.
The Mi’kmaq believe there are spirits and people among us who can bridge the spirit world and physical world.
Have a Great Week-End!
