Tom Petersson on an Alembic 8-string
« on: November 30, 2010, 10:34:15 PM »

I was never a huge fan of Cheap Trick so I'm not familiar with this song but there's kind of a bass solo at the beginning!

Here are a couple of stills:

I've been hankering after an 8-string again, this doesn't help!  ;D

I believe he recorded some of the Heaven Tonight album with that bass. He didn't do a lot of recording with the 12 string. What producer wants to hear THAT?!?!  :-\

I'm quite enjoying the Hamer I just bought from Baz.

Heaven Tonight was 4-string except the title track which was the first ever Hamer 12-string. Dream Police, the next album, featured the Alembic 8 on a couple tracks, Gonna Raise Hell and Need Your Love, which everyone thinks is 12 but are actually the Alembic 8.
What model Hamer do you have? I wanted a 12 ever since Heaven Tonight was released, that photo of it on the sleeve called to me! LOL
Took me a few years before I got my first, a B12S, which is closest to the original you can get. Quickly bought a second B12S as a back-up and the band took off across the country, the basses always had a small crowd at the front of the stage. HA
After that band broke up in the late 90s I sold one of them but I still have the other.

Ha! I was at that show! I have to check for the ol' ticket stub, but it was either with Rush or UFO. Anyhow, here's a better look at the bass from that night...

1990 B12S in pearl white. I had started a thread looking for some TB+ pups for it a while back. I ended up with a pair of neck position DiMarzio D Activator X at the recommendation of Steve Blucher at DiMarzio. Good advice! I'm very happy with the sound. They're actually quite like the Gibsons I was looking for. Bar "poles", ceramic magnets, 11.29K DC. They make the bass "fit in" with the rest of my collection better than the stock EMGs. I also added some Gibson chrome cap knobs.  ;D You can just sit around and jam on this thing like an acoustic guitar. Or as some people say - it's like strapping on a baby grand piano! Ugh... I said "strapping on". There goes this thread!  :D

Thanks for the excellent pic!!! Headstock and everything!

I actually was offered an 8-string Alembic the day after I made a similar post at the Alembic Club. Funny how these things work...

I remember being disappointed that he wasn't using the 'birdie...

The deal fell through, so no Alembic 8 for now...
