Title: Peavey T40 creativity
Post by: Pilgrim on May 17, 2013, 07:04:16 PM
In passing through a local pawn shop I found a Peavey T40 in good overall shape - man, those things are solid but heavy.

Then I noticed the bridge saddle had been creatively replaced, which was a major contributing factor to high action:

Creativity knows no bounds.

And with an offer of $325 from the pawn shop guy, I don't need a boat anchor, although by all reports they sound quite good.

Unless I'm missing something, nothing has been replaced. Someone has raised the action with that section of copper pipe, but there was nothing there to replace. Makes you wonder what else is going on.

Haha intonation is soooo overrated!

I looked at some other photos of T40 bridges and it looked like there was a U-shaped saddle held in place with a screw.

But Dave, you're right!  Nothing is missing - just the pipe added.

This photo (found on the web) helped me see my error.  The screw I saw is just part of the bridge mounting, and the forward part of the bridge has no role in intonation.  The saddles are built into each unit which contains the individual string anchor.

That means something really major is going on with that bass, with the additional lift the pipe provides.

Yup - here's my beautiful little (12 lbs.) boat anchor:

You can clearly see that the copper pipe reservoir is naked on mine.

It's the mute compartment. Peavey supplied the bass with a block of foam mute that fits exactly in there.

I saw this one (http://www.ebay.com/itm/1980-PEAVEY-T-40-T-60-T-45-USA-VINTAGE-BLACK-ELECTRIC-BASS-GUITAR-w-HARD-CASE-/271203990501?pt=Guitar&hash=item3f25047be5) on eBay - pretty in black and only 10lbs. It's an early one with the pre-blade pickups.

Yeah, that does look like a Chumley mod.  As a friend of mine used to say, "that boy don't have the brains God promised a fence post."

Besides, everyone knows that brass or stainless pipe sounds better than copper.  :P
