When it rains it pours! Just came in today, I stopped by tonight and took some quick pics. I can get a price for you if you like.(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/GFIVbass001.jpg)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/GFIVbass002.jpg)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/GFIVbass004.jpg)(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/GFIVbass003.jpg)

Wow!
I'd be interested to hear what you think of it's tone thru an amp at HOG Scott.
-
I didn't have time to plug it in, maybe in the next day our so. I don't expect much no matter what the pups are, there's just no mass to the body. Pretty sure it is a 34" scale. I'll stick with Tbirds. Makes me want to chrome out my cherry bird!
-
The only thing keeping me from that new cherry fin 'Bird is that I own a Nikki Sixx Mk. II - chromed out. It's an expensive proposition regardless of who's new pups you use. The big LP is another matter I'm still considering - I think that bass in black is SEX!
-
Sigh, ich möchte bitte auch die V-Waffe haben, Herr Dasson.
Someone stop this, please!
-
Nice to see you getting a bass with the proper color on the hardware this time :-*
-
Hey blame Henry J. not me ! Crap I'm gunna have to get my daughter to translate this she is in her third year of German :)
Sigh, ich möchte bitte auch die V-Waffe haben, Herr Dasson.

-
Internet Explorer has an Accelerator "Tarnslate with Bing" which the above translates to:
"Sigh, I would like to please even the V-Waffe have, Mr Dasson."
Makes sense to me...not.
-
I'd like to have the V-weapon, please.
-
I'd like to have the v-weapon too please. ;D
-
Wow chrome pups.
-
Guys, I'm deeply moved. Your Deutsch couldn't be any better if vee had won.
-
.... if vee had won.
If you had one of what?
And who IS on second, anyway???

I like how close to the neck the front pickup is. I'm curious about the scale length....

The bridge sure looks closer to the body end than the original Flying V Bass.
-
nice. I wonder how it sounds though
-
I would expect a high-pitched, piercing, rather uncomfortable to the human ear sound.

Seriously, it will sound like almost all Flying V basses of any maker: not that great. The question whether a Flying V bass sounds good is a bit like whether ultra-high-heels are comfortable and healthy to wear. It's really not the point. But you can look cool with it.

I could rock that bass ;)
-
I have just made another contribution to the flagging US economy, Scott. Via pay pal.
-
Scott's the man who broke the bank of Uwe Hornung... (to a popular old tune) ;D
re Halestorm vid... 2 Vee's and a P... ;)
My commiserations go to Rob and his Mac... more trips across the border to Kollection Zentral...
-
Actually 2 Vees and a J ;D
-
Even after repeated viewing, I failed to register any guitars or basses in that vid :-\, but I sure like Halestorm a lot just the same. Must be the music and the innocent charm of its presentation. Strokes a chord with me.

I see that in preparation of our resumption of fiscal control your German has much improved!!!

Another chick with a Flying V that can sing:

Yes thems Vermont roots ! She is a tall drink o water!
-
Indeed.
So are we establishing that Flying Vs and well-singing chicks go together well and that there must be a primal attraction between them?
Similarities in thrown shapes maybe? :-X
But before we wander off even further, here's another thing coming in the "wimmin' with Veees"-category:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgFzEDoZ9JQ&feature=related
And as the ultimate accolade by their idol, I've heard that the Metal God loves them only for their music.
A black chick doing a credible Halford impersonation - who'd have thought.
-
Donita Sparks usually played a V in L7, but it's a stretch to call her a looker. OTOH how many other V-playing women have ever tossed a used tampon into the crowd?

Trying hard too, for some reason (a bit of a hobby too) I started learning 6 months ago. Got my first exams for A2 Zertifikat next month too...

Well, if it's chromed it has to sound better! I mean, what the hell, it is a scientifically proven fact ;D
I do like the cherry though.

Oops... gotta admit my eye wasn't on the ball, or the J for that matter... ;D

Gotta give you that one... acoustic doesn't allow much room for hiding the defects of what appears to be a perfectly formed larynx...
... OTOH how many other V-playing women have ever tossed a used tampon into the crowd?
My side of the pond too... they shoulda pulled the plug on that one...
-
How much for the 'V'???
-
Map is $1,499 pm me for pricing.

"How many other V-playing women have ever tossed a used tampon into the crowd?"
Some people take unplugged gigs too literally. Besides, I find the whole thing kinda unmusical. Now if she had played slide with it first to dampen the strings ...

A few days after the show, Donita threatened to come back to Reading the next year, give birth and eat the placenta on stage.

Yummy. Best prepared medium-rare.

Any word on what the scale length is? GC has the Epi Korina V in stock, and it's listed as short scale, 30"
-
My Gibson source told me that its short scale (and sent me specifications indicating a 30" neck), but I'm not so sure anymore looking at this pic:
and the position of the bridge which is indeed about an inch farther back than on the 81 Flying Vs (which als had 21 frets, not 20 like this one):
Here's an 81 in comparison:
-
The body of the new Flying V looks smaller to me.
-
Because the neck is larger? I've asked Kevin from Gibson again and will dutifully report here. If the new Flying V were longscale, that would indeed be something. Neck heaviness is not an issue with these, btw, due to the wings reaching so far back.
-
Because the neck is larger?
Yes that is what I think.
-
A 20-fret 34" scale neck is 1.86" longer (nut to last fret) than a 21-fret 30.5" neck. If the body is the same size, that would mean the bridge would have to be about 1.64" closer to the body end. Looking at those pics, I'm not sure there's that much room.
-
Maybe it's medium, 32" scale, just like the old glorious Explorer where....i remember Uwe loves the fat sound of those ;D
-
Gibson has again told me it's 30.5".
-

-
i like the look of the 81 more than the new one. but i still want one. the only full scale V's i know of are the Kramer aluminum neck and those Dean thingies
-
Even the Kramers were only medium scale. I believe that - most likely for weight reasons - there were no long scale alu necks from Kramer with any model.
The Ibanez Vs of the seventies and eighties were long scale too.
-
The '81 looks better IMHO but I've read that the sound is not to die for.
-
Pretty much how you would expect a short scale Ripper with too little body mass to sound. Neither growl nor snap, neither mudbucking lows nor Rickenbacker'esque piano string sound. A beautiful look wasted on less than mediocre sonics.
-
I think the new one looks gorgeous in the press pics on the Gibson site.
Except for the shoulders. I still think they're too small.
-
It's all maho, so it should at least have some growl. The 81 version had an alder body with a maple neck and thus aped the Rippers (at least the early alder body ones) in that respect too.
-
http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Bass/Gibson-USA/Flying-V-Bass.aspx
Visually, it looks short scale to me.....
-
If you read well, they state it's 30,5" at the Gibson site.
-
Gibson all of the sudden remember Jack B. as a short scale player. And the other guy from The Beatles:
"Take Flight With a Radical Bass Alternative"
Ever since its introduction in 1958 as part of Gibson's Modernist Series, the Flying V guitar has been an icon of heavy rock tones and alternative looks. Not satisfied with letting the six-stringers have all the fun, Gibson USA has configured this rocket-age styling into a mean and meaty package for the bassist in search of a scorching low-end alternative: the Flying V Bass. With its 30-1/2" scale length, which is still somewhat longer than the conventional guitar, this bass is perfect for players with shorter arms and smaller hands, beginners and students, or those who are more familiar with six-string guitar scale lengths. But it's also a fully professional instrument for the highest-flying touring or studio musician. Two of the world's most famous bassists, Paul McCartney and Jack Bruce, played short-scale basses at the most influential points of their careers, and countless others have used them to make legendary rock, pop and blues recordings. The Flying V Bass brings weighty tones and easy playability to a package styled for the most radical rock that the 21st century has to offer, and suitable for every variety of music."
The part about the poor "players with shorter arms and smaller hands" sounds a bit though as if they've been lurking this forum and its Thalidomide excursions! "Still somwhat longer than a convential guitar" - if there has ever been an ultimate insult to shortscale players this must be it. : - )
-
- if there has ever been an ultimate insult to shortscale players this must be it. : - )
Perhaps more evidence that Gibson doesn't understand how to market to bass players. It's definitely a guitar-centric company.

Yep. Utterly clueless.
-

I shook hands with Stanley Clarke, another longtime short scale player, and I can tell you his hand is huge... He plays the upright like a mandolin. I'm 6'1" (long hair, between Marcus and Victor) and you can see Stanley is maybe 5" taller than me. When will people stop with that nonsense about "short scale is for smaller hands"?

What's the story behind that pic, Ilan... 8)
-
gibson has been 'insulting' shortscale players for years with that bit of copy. it sounds idiotic.
-
The bass looks great on the Gibson site.
-

I work for Channel 2 News in Israel as an entertainment correspondent, so I get to meet lots of interesting people.
-
Here, we might discuss it somewhat like busses... you wait all day and then three come along at once... ;)
-
Ilan, the ole celebrity-hound!!!   I actually liked the CD from these three guys and I don't even slap.
There is nothing wrong in stating that a short scale is easier to play for someone coming from guitar etc. But the way Gibson words it, it sound like they are excusing themselves for producing one rather than saying things like that a short scale has less string tension and allows therefore more expressive, bend-prone playing or actiually more busy playing per se.
-
how would they market a 35 inch scale if they made one...
-
Simple.
A beginners bass with extra large fretboard for players who have trouble placing their fingers in those small spaces between the frets. Once you've got that down you can slowly upgrade to a 34 inch scale.
Once you really have your fine motorics under control you can try a 30 inch scale.
Professionals become a guitar player.

And when they get really good at guitar, they can aspire to be great mandolin players.

You're missing Rob's point, which was that shorter scale lengths require more skill fitting our big clumsy bassist fingers between the frets. ;) A mandolin has a much shorter scale length than a guitar -- Gibsons are 13 7/8". A 5-string banjo is as long as a guitar.
-
Family portrait ;) My bird is on the left. Uwe your basses will ship this week.(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/Vbasscherrytbirds004.jpg)
-
They're gorgeous!
Slag 'em all you want - I LOVE Gibson basses!
-
Hey, I got Rob's point, but rather than posting something about a mini ukulele, I wanted to sneak in Duelling Banjos!
-
It's too bad that Gibson discriminates against ham-fisted, sausage-fingered knuckle draggers. Why should the fairy-fingered shortasses get all the cool basses? I smell a class action lawsuit.
-
Is it possible to get me a hi res picture of the V bass only, for our magazine? If possible right from the front, high resolution and a one colour backhground. Would be more than great!!!

Chris check the Gibson site. They have several good press pics.

I was at the Gibson Press Site, but they don't seem to have 'm. I will look better!
-
I have not had time to even plug it in and now it is all packed up. :( I was away gigging all weekend my Wife is out of town all week between work and daddy duty running my daughter here and there I haven't had a moment. What I can say is it is short scale, very well made, beautiful really the best looking Flying V bass to date imho. She plays great. I am really interested in how the chrome humbuckers sound. I'll let Uwe give his impressions when he gets the bass, he does have a way with words.
How does the Flying V sound?
-
Cool!! Curious about this one..actually really digging the look,
-
Dying to hear Uwe's report onj that and of all his new flock.
-
+1
-
I will, I'm a little behind things, Nov and Dec are busy months at a law firm. Only just received the LP OS Goldtop which I have dubbed "Pregnant Paula", because that is what she looks like. More comfortable to play sitting down though, doesn't slip off your leg like normal size LPs always do.
And I still have to report about the CAR 82 Grabber with 3-ply neck and maple body which sounds wholly different to my 74 Grabber Blue with one-piece neck and alder body.
-
I guess instead of making my Sixxbird MKII, they're using up cherry finishes for other T-birds n Fl;yin' Vees!
-

So fin's do effect the sound?
The market has opened wide up for you.
