My long scale semi-hollow bass prototype, the PhattKat
« on: October 06, 2009, 10:17:04 PM »
Ok, guys. I finally had time to take pictures of my semi-hollow prototype, so as I promised in another thread a couple of weeks ago, I'm posting some pictures and some details here.

The body shape and size is taken from the Epiphone Kat series, so you could say is a long lost cousin to the RumbleKat, I guess. I'm calling it the PhattKat.
All local Brazilians woods, and pretty much all salvage woods as I approached this as a prototype so I try to use left overs from other projects.

Pickups are single-coils from a local manufacturer, and RW/RP between each other so they "buck the hum" when on the same level.

I started this about three years ago, building between projects whenever I had the time and it's been one year since I had it painted and finished but I couldn't find the time to assemble it. Found the time about a month ago since things was slow at the shop so I could finally put it all together.
It went through a lot of changes during the building time as I was trying different approaches to the design (which I think is the idea of building a prototype) and now that it's done and I play tested a good deal of it, I think it's a solid design.

Hope you guys enjoy it. Comments, questions, critics are welcome, after all, that's what I signed up for!
Anyway, here's the first shot:

And some video clips. Don't mind the louzy playing, I just suck at it. I used to be a ok player before I started building full time, I was even in a band and we had regular paying gigs, but now I only play when I have to test a bass I just build. When I finish a guitar, then I have to call some friends because I REALLY SUCK at guitar!

Anyways, here it goes:

Wow, stunning! One of the best basses I've seen in a while. Really Beautiful!!!! I love everything, but especially the looks of the pick ups and bridge cover.

WOW! Just wow! Even if I'd prefer it to have a short scale neck (long scale looks kinda long for that kind of body I think) its just beautiful!
Music was better when ugly people were allowed to make it.

Lovely!  Very nice work.  Tell us more about the pickups and hardware.  Did you finish it with poly or lacquer?  Are you building and selling?
I'm fixin' a hole where the rain gets in..........cuz I'm built for a kilt!

That sounds just like a semihollow should sound. Your playing is fine, no need to apologize.

The bass is beautiful. What species is the top wood? If it's not a mahogany, is it related? I really like the grain.

ABSOLUTELY gorgeous!  Love the look and I deeply admire the workmanship.  The bridge and bridge cover make a very appealing touch.

And I wish that I could play Lady Madonna as well as YOU do.  Don't apologize for very competent bass playing.

Thanks! You guys are just too kind...

I'm always apologetic about my playing just because I don't want to look like I posted the videos to show off.

Doc and Dave, I'll answer your questions properly when I get home tonight, I just loged in to check any messages.
