Gibson Basses / Re: Bass IV question
« on: March 03, 2020, 09:25:02 AM »
The bass came in on Sunday, no issues to speak of other than the missing knob.  Still has the plastic film on the cavity cover!
It just needed the truss rod tightened up a bit, and then I raised the saddles a hair.  Nice action, but there is a slight rise where the fretboard lays on the body.  Nice & light also, maybe about 7 lb.
The neck is very wide though, which I'm not a big fan of, so I most likely won't use it much or may just pass it on.  Anyway, I think I got a pretty good deal on it, so I'm happy.

Very nice.  I like the truss rod nut at the heel end, makes the neck stronger.  Is this bass for your personal use, or to sell?

Is the body of the early LP bass exactly the same size as the Triumph?

Nice looking bass. I like those natural finish IVs. I kind of half agree with Uwe - black does look good against the maho. But nothing beats chrome tuners on a black headstock. My cherry sunburst Guild Pilot 5 currently has a black bridge and chrome tuners. Kind of messes with my OCD, but when it was time to replace the old Gotohs, I couldn't get myself to buy black ones.  ;)

That's an idea, but I'll most likely just leave it stock.  While I'm no fan of black hardware, it does look sorta elegant against the natural mahogany, and I got plenty axes with chrome.

Looks like there's chrome strap buttons on there though.  Gibson, they can never fully commit.  :-\

Please don't, it's lovely as is. The brown and black go well together, chrome cheapifies everything. I have a Bass V with the same fin.

It needs something.  Maybe a competition stripe?

Thank you for the responses.  Just bought this one on Reverb, should get it Saturday.  I may have to go full chrome on this one.   ;D

The Gibson Bass IV from 1987, did they all come with black hardware? Anyone know?

Anyone got side-by-side pics of 760's and Chinabuckers (or EY or HK 'buckers)?  I have Chinabuckers on hand but unfortunately no 760's (excluding original '60s 760's).

My fret ends are slightly sharp, a little more so on the treble side, but no worse than I expected.  I did a quick setup on the bridge, huge difference!  Look at the before and after, the intonation was way off.  Sucks that the string windings sit on the saddles though, I may have to get one of those bar extender thingies.

Looks like you could hide a body in that bag.

No idea what Gibson was thinking with this one.  I bet it'd be great for a long-scale 335 bass, but unfortunately I don't own one and would probably have a hard case for it if I did.   ???

The bass is here, but due to the cold Minnesota weather (it's up to 16 degrees) I have to wait to open it. Inside the gig bag pocket is it's "Birth Photo".

Did yours come in the XXL gig bag also?

Here's what I wrote down years ago.  These are taken from my own measurements, not the actual specs, so there's some variation.  Looking at these numbers now, I suppose it would only take a slight amount of "clearancing" to fit the bar bridge to the Tilt-O-Matic posts.

I stand corrected. I was unaware of a second edition bar bridge. When were these fitted? I suppose the second edition still had a wider spread of the poles than the tune-o-matic?

Change to 2nd version was about '65, same time-frame as the transition from nickel to chrome hardware.  Pretty sure the stud spacing on the two different bar bridges is the same, the Tilt-O-Matic and the 3-point are both slightly different.  I'm gonna see if I can find the measurements in my notes.

The blue stain guitar was only really blue on about 1/3rd of the body, the rest looked closer to black.

My blue bass is also pretty dark, but at least the 3-piece body is well-matched, so I'm happy about that.  I once bought a new cherry-finish Firebird Tribute model that had a 4-piece body (if I remember right), and one small piece near the knobs stuck out like a sore thumb, way darker than the rest.  Sent it back.  That wasn't the only reason though, it neither felt good nor sounded good.  Ordered another one from a different retailer and got a good one, still have it.
