Lists usually aren't taken very seriously anymore. I don't take this one seriously, either. But the reason it got my attention is because I disagree with it so much. I don't know what my own list of America's greatest rock bands would be. I do know it would look very different from this one. For starters, I'd move the Allman Brothers from an honorable mention to first place. CCR wouldn't be on the list at all. At best they might be an honorable mention. In fact, I have to wonder if this list might be some kind of Onion-level joke. People have different tastes; that's normal. Also, through the years I don't think so highly of my taste in music as I used to. I definitely respect what other people say. I even respect this guy. But having to go on a long trip with him with music playing in the car would not be easy. I'd probably want to start with the Allman Brothers, ZZ Top and Hendrix.

And yes, ABB would be on top of my list as well, closely followed by Vanilla Fudge and a couple of others who didn't even get a honorary mention such as Alice In Chains.

But Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Neil Young and Frank Zappa are not there because are not bands? They have Experience, Double Trouble, Crazy Horse and the greatest bands and fine musicians I ever heard in life.
And CCR, Eagles, Metallica and Chicago in top ten? And Allman Brothers Band? Guys where are Grateful Dead?

I like the Doors okay. But some of Jim Morrison's antics were a little over the top. Also, it always bothered me that they didn't have a bass player. Vanilla Fudge, on the other hand, may have been the first band in my life that just totally blew me away. I was literally in awe of them for a time. Jefferson Airplane I also liked a lot, although not as much as Vanilla Fudge. There was a time when Tim Bogert was my main bass hero, too.

Well, unfortunately you have to be American to make the American rock bands list. Otherwise, I'm sure Men Without Hats would have been on there. Also, Men At Work if they hadn't been Australian.

There are many of my favorites on that list, but my favorites extend to a looong list which I would'nt even be able to rank since they're all good in their own special way.

I never kept up with them. I guess that's 80s New Wave. The only thing I know about them is that "Safety Dance" song that used to be on MTV. I thought they were from Europe, though. They're Canadian but their singer was from the U.S. I just looked it up.

I did say in the first two sentences, though, that most people don't take lists seriously and that I wasn't taking this one seriously, either. My main purpose in posting it was to point out its absurdity. Some of the comments, by the way, under the article were pretty hilarious. That was the best part for me.

In reading some of the comments below the article, it appears more people agreed with the writer of the article than I would have expected. One person even said CCR was more influential than the Beatles. Somehow somewhere along the way I must have missed out on CCR's significance. I've been in bands that covered their music quite a lot. I do feel I know at least something about their songs.
As for bands receiving an honorable mention, I'd include the Doobie Brothers and Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels.

If ONE cut could put you into a top 10 rock & roll list, then I agree, it would be that cut by Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. One of the very best, hardest rocking cuts in history.

It reads to me more like an FM radio playlist from Clear Channel, proof that repetition matters much more than excellence.

What a pile of crap. Like most "greatest" lists, the definition of the adjective itself is nebulous, to say the least. To compile a list of anything without also identifying criteria for inclusion therein is just plain stupid.

Lists are inherently dumb. Fun to write, usually terrible to read.
I wouldn't have any problem with any of those bands appearing on a top 100 or maybe even top 50 list, but for top 12, it's a pretty spectacularly dull list.

I can kinda get the concept of this list.
I think the emphasys should be on "American" rather than on "Greatest".
Meaning it is not "America's Greatest Rock Bands" but rather "Greatest Rock Bands That Feel The Most American For The Rest Of The World".
Especially considerind the top 3.
