silverburst triumph???
« on: November 27, 2009, 05:37:00 PM »
Sorry if this has been posted before, but I was grazing through the Olivia's site and found this:

1979 Gibson Triumph Les Paul Bass SILVERBURST

Thoughts?

Just noticed - the controls are very different from a standard Triumph - two volumes, no phase switch, no 3 position tone selector switch and the input jack on is on the side of the bass, not on the top. The recent eBay 1980 one has standard controls.

I don't remember seeing that one before.

Olivia's sure seems to come up with the unusual.

It seems to have a separate jack for each "Hi" & "Low" Impedance, instead of the switch. This is the same sort of setup that was on the last version of the Les Paul Recording guitar. To me, this looks modified. I'm pretty sure the jack plates on the guitar were two separate standard chrome jackplates vs one double jackplate on this silverburst. The serial number apears to be stamped unusually deep. Restamped after a refin or neck repair?  ???  ???  ???

Very weird. The Lo-Z pickup usually have eight leads each. In different colors. I see nothing but brown wires coming out of the body. And certainly less than 16.
The pickups do look like bass Lo-Z pickups. Guitar Lo-Z pickups are smaller.

Maybe it's a custom shop creation?

Uwe go get it! :toast:

On second glance, it has a transformer & the "HI" "LOW" Impedance switch, making the extra output jack more of a mystery. Somebody, either on this sight or Jules sight, posted an excellent sumary of what all four sets of leads do. The pickups can run on two leads each. They've eliminated the "Phase" switch. Don't know if one of the "Tones" is suppose to be a "Bass" control, as Witch Hat knobs never came in anything other than Volumn & Tone.

To me it even looks like there are two impedance transformers hidden under that piece of foam.

The leads on the original Lo-Z bass pickups are three coiltaps.  Maybe you're right and they used only the last coiltap?

Thats what I thought, but now the two transformers are a bit puzzling. I'll have to try to trace the wires better. Maybe it's a stereo setup, with a transformer for each pickup & a DPDT Impedance switch. Can't really see the switch.............. ??? ???

I can't see Uwe paying that kind of money for this one. If only he collected for finishes!  ;D

Here is one that I think was/is owned by someone at TalkBass or from Jules site?

Yep, looks the same.

I don't think I've seen it at Jules site.
Must have been at TalkBass then, I never go there  ;)

It's beautiful, but I think its origins (and whether it is authentic) are lost in the mists of time. More than 5.000 bucks is steep for that uncertainty.
