Post by: godofthunder on May 28, 2008, 07:12:30 PM
I just picked up a 70's Ampeg B-25 head for 339.00 More than I wanted to pay but it just sounded so F'ng good. Just right for our rehersal studio, the thing roars ! Happy, happy happy. ! What ohm cabs can I run with this thing ? I did a little reasearch looks like they go from 16(1cab) - 8(2 cab) ohm

Once I did find a schematic of the B-25 combo online for someone, IIRC the output transformer was a 16 ohm arrangement with the two 8 ohm internal speakers in series, and it was center tapped for an 8 ohm external speaker jack. But I'm not sure how the head differs.

I think the ones that were the best were the later models that were used against Japan during the war.

Simple ain't the word for it ! But man does it sound fantastic ! Really no joke. If I see another I am going to buy it. V4Bs sound very similar, tonealy the SVT does not do it for me but either of these amps sure do ! Just plug in dial in and go.  HOT STUFF !

Simple ain't the word for it !

I meant the simple lay out. I like my Vox (volume, high, low) and my Orange (volume, hi, mid, lo, gain) for their simplicity. The basic sound with everything in the middle is great and you just have to tweak it a bit for different basses and/or venues.

I hate EQs, mid shifts, low end buttons, ...

Chris I'm with you I hate graphic EQs, to many knobs and switch are a pain in the ass. How loud is it ? you run out of headroom just past 12 o'clock. For rehersal it is perfect, it keeps up with a 50w marshall and our drummer who hits pretty dam hard. I would use it at a small gig miked, I think it would get lost on a larger stage.  The great thing about this amp is you get that nice full fat, warm, gritty, punchy, tube sound a a volume that won't kill you, perfect of our rehersal studio.

Sounds nice!

I especially hate bass boosts. You plug in, push the bass boost and the E-string is very fat, but then you hear the rest isn't. So you push it out again and then the sound between the strings is even, but it isn't as fat as you heard....

I've not had a chance to try one of these but have heard great things about their tone. I absolutely love my V4b. You mentioned getting a second one which is something I've considered. I haven't really settled on the perfect cab but am seriously considering the Orange 1x15 and think two O1x15 next to each other with two V4b a top of each would be one formidable tone machine.

P.S. Congrats on the score.
