Gibson Basses / Re: Gruber T-Bird
« on: October 06, 2010, 08:06:01 AM »
I found a pic of the modified 3 pickup T-Bird that Craig Gruber used on the first Rainbow LP.

But isn't it a 4 pickup T-Bird? There seems to be a Jazz pickup between the bridge and the bridge-T-bird humbucker.

Perhaps it's a Dawg mod?

Is that a Coliseum or a Concert head behind you?

The bridge pickup mod to a '51 style P or a Telebass was quite common in the seventies I think. Jimmy Bain, Charles Tumahai (Be-Bop Deluxe) and Chris Squire all had Teles with bridge pickups. Squire used his quite famously on "Lucky Seven" from his solo album.

This was the first generation, right?

When this model was in production and when did they change the outlook (for the worst if you ask me...)?

Sounds great. Gotta buy it on vinyl which seems to be shit-expensive.

Yes indeed. The gig after the famous Leeds' one gets a release. I would have been happy with just that but of course they have to make it a part of an expensive box. I already have "Live At Leeds" on vinyl and CD (the same deluxe edition as on the forthcoming box) and studioversion of "Heaven & Hell" I have too so that "Summertime Blues" 7" doesn't lure me either.

Aaa...what the f*** I'm complaining, I'll buy it anyway. ;D

I also think he was in the second incarnation of Sharks with Chris Spedding and Andy Frasier.

No, he was in the second incarnation of Badger, also featuring Tony Kaye, ex -Yes organist.

The 2nd incarnation of Sharks did not include Andy Fraser but Busta Cherry Jones on bass.

Yes, unfortunately it's still a Micro-Frets.

I've only seen maybe 4 of them ever. None of them had any low end to speak of.

Yes, but with Marshall fuzz you can nail that gnarly tone and with the aid of bass pedals play arpeggios high on the neck:

A nice recreation of the bass Mike used on "The Lamb" and "A Trick":

Solved the tuning problem by getting rid of the bass strings, putting another set of octave strings and tuned it CC/GG/DD/AA. Mandocello! Works very well even if the scale is about 5 inches longer than on a normal mandocello.

What's nice about the Bicentennials though is the way they are wired (parallel?) in their original shape and how - unlike sixties or modern Birds - having both pups full throttle will actually create a fuller sound than just the neck pup.

They are wired in series. Someone with more knowledge will tell more about the wiring which is a bit strange IIRC.

Other Hawkwind bass players certainly did play Gibson EBs.

Adrian Shaw, played on "Quark, Strangness & Charm" and "PXR5". His predecessor (and Lemmy's replacement) Paul Rudolph used a Precision.

He could also be playing an EB in the official Silver Machine vid, it's hard to tell. Alternatively it's that unknown brand SG type bass (also with apparently TBird pups) he handled for a while.

It was a Hopf, Lemmy's first bass.

He's known for liking T'birds and their sound. One of the Rics with T'bird pickup:

That is the original Ric. A 4000, with an added neck pickup, perhaps?
