The Outpost Cafe / Hi, I'm a Mac....
« on: February 07, 2008, 05:48:34 AM »
You every see the Mac Vs. Windows Vista commercials?

I have always been a Mac Homo (George's term for Mac users). They always have been great machines for myself and at work.

Well, we upgraded to Mac Leopard and we have had nothing but problems with our No-intel based machines. My G-5 Tower at work won't read any camcorder. Apple even replaced the Logic board and still nothing! The tech suggested I down grade to Mac Tiger, which I did and everything worked fine. The problem with that was all my files were up graded by Leopard and non readable by Tiger.

Apple had no idea on what to do. I complained and they are sending me a new MAc Pro quad core Intel Tower in exchange for my old machine. I can't believe they are giving me a new machine!

It has to mean they know there is an Leopard issue and they either can't or wont fix it.

I had a similar issue with several IPods where they crapped out, they just exchanged it for the same model, no questions, testing or anything.

My experience with Apple service has been still excellent. It always pays to get the extended warranty as well. One of my Ipods that I exchanged was two months past the extended warranty. They still gave me a new I pod. I always get a tech on the phone (usually not from India)

Just a little pricey for a refin?

I thought we learned from Kevbo that the sticker has to have a "N" after the model number?

The Outpost Cafe / Outlaw- Internet inspired TV
« on: January 29, 2008, 10:47:19 AM »
We have a couple of newer TV stations we discovered called Current TV & The Fuse Network.

http://current.com/?xid=200

Current TV is cool as it's non stop mini POD Casts made by pretty much anyone who is a journalist/film maker. Even the commercials are made by independent film makers or anyone with a camera. What I like about it is the fresh & unbiased, brutally honest stories you just can't get on Network TV. They had one on where Mardi Gras Beads are made in China. They filmed the young female workers who make $35 a month working 50 hour or more weeks in a factory running 24 hours a day seven days a week. Their fingers are all cut up and covered in duct tape.

Then they filmed Mardi Gras with all the drunk women showing their boobs for beads. Next they showed the films to the other group. The Chinese girls had no idea what the beads were for and shocked at the Mardi Gras behavior. They said they would never do that.

The Mardi Gras people who were laughing & carrying on, watched the video and you see their faces sink as they watch the young Chinese girls.  At the end they said we don't want any beads anymore. They felt really embarrassed.

Another thing they had was about the random journalists who went to Lebanon and while filming, were taken hostage. The captures filmed parts of it and they really thought they were going to die. They also almost got hit by a rocket grenade while filming on their scooter. Just amazing stories, but all in about 10 minute segments

The Fuze Network, out of NY had a show with Henry Rollins as the host and had features avant garde artist and musicians. It was just in a different format vs MTV trying to shove their corporate products down your throat.

YouTube is merging with TV and will never be the same.

The Outpost Cafe / David Glimour - On An Island
« on: January 29, 2008, 08:03:11 AM »
I recently bought David Gilmour's solo disc - On An Island. It's an amazing CD. Mellow, but very mellow Floyd like with some great Gilmour signature guitar work and vocals. Sounds like it could have been from The Dark Side of the Moon era.

I highly recommend it if you were ever a Floyd fan. Not much bass work on it to speak of, typical for a guitarist from the time.

I also think that Gilmour is an unsung guitarist as he really is not a flashy player like Beck or Clapton, but his sound is unmistakable.
I put him in the Santana boat in that respect.

The Outpost Cafe / Really Big Lizards!
« on: January 29, 2008, 06:20:10 AM »
We went to see the Komodo dragon that was touring here in Chicago at the Shedd Aquarium.

First off the lizard is just a juvenile about 12 feet long with a body the size of a large lab dog.

They had him in the really large glass enclosed room. You could go right up to the glass to see him.

What was funny and scary at the same time there was a lady with a toddler and the toddler took off running in front of the glass. The Dragon seeing this turned his head and went running after the toddler!

It was shocking on how fast the giant could move and he did not drag his tail or stomach on the ground, he just went into chase mode. Good thing for the glass!

The Staff is always present at the exhibit and commented on how dangerous it is to be around the lizard. They don't look forward to dealing with it directly.

I believe this is the same Dragon that when younger bit a celebrities foot?

There has been endless speculation over the years regarding the world’s largest lizard, the Komodo Dragon. Most of it surrounds the fact that it is found in only one part of the world. Queries were raised questioning the very existence of these creatures. Until recently there was precious little that was known about the lizard. A couple of years ago it got into the news for the wrong reasons, a Komodo Dragon managed to bite popular Hollywood actress Sharon Stone’s husband, Phil Bronstein. He was immediately provided with medical aid to prevent any further damage.

Gibson Basses / Jone Paul Jones Played an EB-1
« on: January 28, 2008, 03:26:20 PM »
Stealing the God of Thunder's Thunder - In the New February issue of Bass Player Mag they have an interview from John Paul Jones from 1977 saying he used a EB-1 on Led Zeppelin III , but did not like it's Rubbery sound.

He said he had the one that went through Little Richard's Band. No talk about if he still has it.

The Burst finish is really light on this bass and the value chart is interesting-
