Title: Incredibly sad news .......
Post by: luve2fli on August 12, 2010, 05:17:02 PM
Richie Hayward of Little Feat has lost his battle with cancer and passed away. Things will never be the same ....... this is such an incredible loss to the music community and a sad day indeed.

I saw them only two years ago. Nimble drumming. Joins Bonham, Moon and - yes! - Karen Carpenter.

It's not the end of Little Feat, is it? Without wishing to sound callous, they do have experience in carrying on after losing a vital band member (granted, not as much as Lynyrd Skynyrd). No one believed they would ever play again after Lowell George died (and some people probably think they should have kept it at that).

As we grow older, our former musical heroes die, but that doesn't mean that every band - tragic as the loss is - has to do a Led Zeppelin type ritual suicide about it which I always thought a little overdramatic and pompous (perhaps Plant just wanted to leave the constraints of the Zep myth behind and took the opportunity?). When I saw Little Feat last comparatively recently (on a bill that included The Hooters, Gotthard and Deep Purple) they had this "the family who lives together plays together"-vibe. Frankly, they didn't look and act so much like a rock group as a gathering of retired teachers convening for a jam session for charity though their playing was exquisite (ignoring that parts of the set were marred by the young bass player's Kubicki Factor having technical issues and dropping out of the mix again and again).

Very sad news.  I really enjoyed their 1988 LP "Let It Roll".  I really dug the live album back when I was in high school.

Uwe, you can be such a bitch!  ;)  ;D ;D

I'm innocent for once! He was young - by Little Feat "retired teachers"-standard at least (hey, he wore baggies and was skinny!) AND played a Kubicki Factor, which sounded like Kubicki Factors tend to sound, upfront, but kind of dead. Busy player he was too.

R.I.P. Richie. A fabulous drummer. "Tripe Face Boogie" from "Waiting For Columbus" is one of my favourite Hayward moments.

Uwe mentioned Plant and Richie played in his band too. "Shaken 'n' Stirred" (1985) and already on 1984 leg of the "Pictures At Eleven & Principle Of Moments" tour handling all those Phil Collins licks with ease (Cozy & Barrie too) and adding his own personality.

I thought that I'd never seen Little Feat but digging through all my old concert ticket stubs I realized I DID see them once when they opened for Allman Brothers in 1991.
