The Outpost Cafe / Greatest American Rock Bands of All Time
« on: October 19, 2018, 09:12:16 PM »
Lists usually aren't taken very seriously anymore.  I don't take this one seriously, either.  But the reason it got my attention is because I disagree with it so much.  I don't know what my own list of America's greatest rock bands would be.  I do know it would look very different from this one.  For starters, I'd move the Allman Brothers from an honorable mention to first place.  CCR wouldn't be on the list at all.  At best they might be an honorable mention.  In fact, I have to wonder if this list might be some kind of Onion-level joke.  People have different tastes; that's normal.  Also, through the years I don't think so highly of my taste in music as I used to.  I definitely respect what other people say.  I even respect this guy.  But having to go on a long trip with him with music playing in the car would not be easy.  I'd probably want to start with the Allman Brothers, ZZ Top and Hendrix.

The Outpost Cafe / Hurricane Michael
« on: October 11, 2018, 12:19:03 PM »
Years ago, I had a summer job in Panama City, but stayed in a cottage in Mexico Beach, Florida.  Now it's gone.  Mexico Beach is where Michael made landfall.  This is the kind of thing that happens with the third most intense landfall in U.S. history.  CNN reporter Brooke Baldwin is obviously stunned viewing Mexico Beach's devastation by helicopter.

The Outpost Cafe / John Lennon & George Harrison
« on: September 23, 2018, 03:54:54 AM »
John Lennon stating years later that this song was really about himself rather than Paul McCartney, is, of course, absurd.  Just as absurd as George Harrison saying "Something" was really a song about God rather than Pattie Boyd.

Ted Turner was playing acoustic guitar on this song on some of the takes, possibly just on the final version on the "Imagine" album.  He also played on "Crippled Inside," the album's second track.

The Outpost Cafe / Bono
« on: September 03, 2018, 06:59:25 PM »
It seems Bono has been in the news a lot recently because he suddenly lost his voice and had to cancel a Berlin show.

What's the difference between God and Bono?

God doesn't wander around Dublin thinking he's Bono.

The Bass Zone / 2014 Jack Bruce Interviews
« on: November 14, 2017, 01:18:28 AM »
Two interviews with some similarities, but also some differences.  In one, for instance, he is asked which guitarist he liked playing with the most.  Jack dodges the question.  In the other, he seems to indicate he leaned toward Gary Moore (because of their Scottish-Irish bond.)

This probably could have been said more concisely, but here is an article that may be of interest to some.

Although this is more about guitars than bass, I thought this might be of some interest to people who haven't seen it.  i didn't see it posted anywhere.

The Outpost Cafe / Downplaying the 1960s British Invasion
« on: May 06, 2015, 09:10:26 PM »
I've discussed this already to an extent in other topics.  The main idea is that there are people out there (like a close relative I have) who dislike the music of the 60s, 70s, 80s, and think "real" music only began with rap/hip-hop in the early 90s.  Having been around someone who feels this way in real life, the chasm between someone like myself who likes rock and someone who doesn't is almost impossible to completely put into words.  Suffice it to say that there is no room for any compromise or negotiation at all.  It's just people having extremely radically different tastes in music.  But now we have attempts to quantitatively "prove" that current music is really great and music from the past isn't so great.  Certainly, my relative feels that way.

It appears that these so-called "scientists" feel the same way.  It isn't enough that they dislike rock music.  They also want to prove that it was never even as important as a lot of people seem to think.  I doubt if I would have even bothered posting this if I hadn't had to live with it on a personal level for so long.  I suspect a lot of it is just a generational thing.  It's pretty common for one generation to not like the generation's music that came before it.  There are quite a number of articles about this today.  This one just happens to be the first one I ran across this morning when I was reading through NME as I often do.
